Pain behind eye

My 79 Mom had catarct surgery approximately 2 years ago; her eyesight is fine; the problem is she has had swelling around the eye (mainly below) and she has pain in the back of the eye off and on.  Any feedback would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Thank you both so much for your comments.

To Dr. Feldman:   I would say the swelling and pain are at different times.  She doesn't seem to have dry eyes.  I am taking her next week to seek medical attention.

Thank you both

Dear canadaeh,

I would recommend that she seek the care of an eyeMD to determine the cause of her pain and swelling.  Do they occur at the same time or different times? Are her eyes dry?

The swelling below the eye could just be some edema or fluid collection due to fluid overload or excess salt intake and age, of course, plays a role.  Of course, an exam with an opthalmologist will help to to look for other causes like allergies etc.  With the pains, dry eye syndrome is a common culprit and should at least be considered as a possibility.  Again, a complete exam with an ophthalmologist is the  only way to find out what is going on. Have her make an appointment as soon as possible.
