Pink eye treatment

Hi, my 2 year old son has been diagnosed with pink eye. He has had it once in the past and the doctor prescribed him antibiotic eye drops, this time however he has prescribed just regular over the counter eye drops. Will his pink eye go away with just the regular drops or will he eventually need the other drops? He is also on an antibiotic for an ear infection, not sure if this is why he wasn't prescribed the antibiotic eye drops. Thank you!

Pink eye is not a diagnosis but a descriptive term. There are quite a few conditions that can make an eye "pink".  If you mean he has conjunctivitis antibiotic drops are usually prescribed.  If the conjunctivitis is due to a virus the antibiotics will not help however it is often expensive and/or impractical to do tests to make the determination if virus or bacteria. So yes antibiotic drops are usually prescribed.
