When using one eye, vision turns black. Is this normal?

When I close one of my eyes and try to look at things, my vision turns completely black as if I'm closing my eyes.
I can't tell if this is normal or something more serious. It happens in both of my eyes. I don't see this at all with both of them open. I've just gotten some ghosting on one of my eyes and I'm kinda freaked out.

If it is just momentary it likely is a normal physiological reaction from your brain registering the closed eye. However if it persists OR if you have not had an eye exam by an Eye MD ophthalmologist since this developed then you need to have a formal medical examination.
