Progression of chronic CME

Dr. M and Dr. V. each responded but neither addressed my real question. Can I infer an answer?
I want to know if macular edema that persists for years or decades results in ongoing vision loss. Perhaps, the answer is not known because it so rarely happens. I would be satisfied with this answer. Is it more likely that vision loss stabilizes or declines over the long term? I'd appreciate an educated opinion.
Regarding Dr. H's comments: I saw Dr. Charles 18 months ago, when my CME had persisted 2 & 1/2 yrs; he had nothing to offer. Only one ophthalmologist ( an anterior segment MD) has noted iris atrophy and fibers and possible retained cortical material. Numerous MD's say IOL removal would not be a good idea due to fibrosis in the capsule. However, I might consider, if I thought the long term CME meant declining vision.

Thank you, Dr. McGarity,
I appreciate your optimism. I wish I could hope for such an outcome. My vision has slowly worsened with more missing pieces and distortion as the years go by.

In theory, time shouldn't make a difference.

"I want to know if macular edema that persists for years or decades results in ongoing vision loss. "

I don't know the true answer and it's not because it's so rare. If the CME completely resolved your vision would possibly return to normal or near normal. If there is no epiretinal membrane formation which would further distort the surface of the retina and then by chance the CME completely resolved, then I don't see why the vision shouldn't drastically improve. The retinal layers have cystic spaces because of the edema, but theoretically there is no neurosensory separation as in a Rhegmentagenous Retinal Detachment. I hope this helps.
Thanks
Tim
