Hello

We have a new born son - 4days old, and we have noticed that part of one of is pupils is missing.  Is this something to worry about?

Your help would be greaty appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

Ehhh... My son is 24 now with the same pie shaped piece missing from his pupil.  He's fine.  He has had it since birth.  Divots examined him and said it was nothing to worry about.
He has an astigmatism but so do all of my kids.  Why do people insist on stressing out new parents

Because your comment is absolutely wrong as a generalization. The problem may be an isolated malformation like your 24 year old son; but in many infants/children it is associated with a whole host of other problems including abnormal lens, retina, retina and optic nerve.

Yes you need to be very concerned. Tell your pediatrician and get to see an pediatric eye MD ophthalmologist in the next several weeks. Part of the pupil missing is often a sign of iris coloboma (key hole iris). Sometimes the back of the eye (retina, choroid and optic nerve and macula) have corresponding missing areas.
