Retinal Detachment...freaking out a bit.

Hey Folks,

I have recently suffered a detached retina (macula off), I can still see quiet a bit but there is very little clarity in my left eye. The doctors have tested me and I went from 20/20 to 20/100. This is a result of a training accident during sports (wrestling). I'm not sure exactly where to go from here....I am having my pre-op tomorrow and the surgery on weds morning at Mass Eye and Ear. Will I ever be able to workout like I once did? Compete? Right I've been advised nothing more strenous than a walk, no lifting more than 5lbs, and not to bend over. What is the recovery time like? I am 24/M very athletic.

I had my retinal detchment as a result of getting punched during a martial arts class, and my doctor told me that after the surgery, it would be a month or two before I could work out again, and a year before I could fight again. While it ***** that I had to wait, he said that I will be back at my normal capacity eventually.
I realize that your case my be different, but I'm sure you'll be able to get back out there :)

Mass Eye & Ear is one of the best ophthalmology programs in the world. You are in good hands. You need to ask your questions of your surgeons there.

Just wanted to update everyone:

I had my buckle procedure last week and it seemed to go off without a hitch. However on my second follow up it appears that there is fluid pooling near my retina. The surgeon wants to wait until Tuesday to see what happens, if it does not clear then I will be undergoing another procedure to drain the fluid and another cryopexi.
