Retinal Hole Stability

Hello Dr. Hagan

I am severely shortsighted (-9.00 in both eyes), my retina specialist had detected tiny holes in my inferior retina. He ruled out need for any laser treatment for these holes and advised observation / followup every 6 months.

Although I trust my doctor, I would want to play safe and get holes checked frequently to ensure there is no fluid getting collected beneath it

what would be optimum time to do this,
every 2 months, 3 months ? How long after formation of hole does a retinal detachment take place in general ?

and is there a time period beyond which if a retinal hole is stable means it would be stable thereafter in the future ?

Thanks in advance

It depends mainly on the appearance of the hole.  You could always get a second opinion to be sure no laser is required.  Time frame between visits is up for debate.  Every 3-4 months should be a very conservative approach.

Thanks for your response, Dr. Vosoghi.

I heard it takes around 2-3 months for a tear to progress to detachment. what is the time required by a tiny hole to progress to detachment
