Retinal Holes

History:
I am 23 years old. Have high myopia since last 15 years. Started from (-4) both eyes. Has been stable since last 6 years at (-9.5). Till last year no problem detected. I have been working in a job that requires me to work 12 hours a day on computer since last 1 year.

Problem:
In a recent eye check up, the doctor diagnosed 2 holes in my right eye and has recommended Laser surgery to prevent Retinal Detachment

Questions:
1. Why did these hole occur. Was it because of my Computer job?. If yes, then should I change to some other kind of job for future prevention? Or, Can I just take some precautions and long hours on computer wont cause any further trouble? What kind of precautions can I take to stay away from eye diseases and continue this job?
2. Are these surgeries always successful in treating  the holes?
3. Can I again have more holes in retina or do my eyes now become more prone to holes?
4. I already have 2 holes in my eye. Wont one more cause loss of vision ( I am worried about this highly)?
5. Should I get lasik Laser done so that my number goes down and the stress on my eye goes down to prevent retinal detachment from any future holes?

Thanks,
Jackie

1. The holes did not occur because of your computer job. Don't quit. Holes develop more often in myopic people. They occur because of thin areas in the retina or vitreous traction.  You can use your eyes for any visual task you wish.
2. Not every hole needs to be treated. It depends on size, shape, family history and several other factors. Even reputable ophthalmologist disagree about which ones to treat.  You might want to get a second opinion from a retina ophthalmologist.
3. Treating the holes by laser or freezing (cryopexy) in low risk but not no risk. The holes are normally in the peripheral part of the retina that has tissue not normally used for periphal vision.
4. There's nothing you can do to prevent other holes. See an ophthalmologist yearly for a dilated exam. If you have showers of floaters, flashes of light and loss of central or peripheral vision see an Eye MD immediately.
5. Lasik will not decrease your risk of more retinal tears, holes or detachments.
6. If it makes you feel better I have small holes in my retina which have never been treated.
