Red eyes and severe headaches

Hi, I am a 45 years female diagnosed with cervical impingement syndrome, since 1993. Additionally, I suffer severe headaches on a daily basis. Recently, within the last 2 years, my headaches are accompanied by bloodshot red eyes. However, I am not aware of it until someone else asks why are my eyes so red. I have become increasing concerned because I have read that this can be a serious medical problem; stemming from vascular brain problems, tumors and/or other serious issues. To help with the headaches I have receiving epideral injections in my cervical nerve, which serves as a blocker. Still, it only lasts for 3-4 months; and is a risky procedure. My intentions are to see a neurological MD. In the interim, are there any known diagnoses available for this condition?

Dear diamond45,

I would recommend that you seek the care of an eyeMD specializing in neuro-ophthalmology to assist you in finding out the cause of your headaches and eye redness.  There diagnoses which can cause both things.

My main concern is that there is a small but real risk of developing cataracts and/or glaucoma from the steroid injections.  You should see an ophthalmologist for a complete exam and be sure to mention the injections.  The red eyes can be checked out as well.  Vascular problems related to red eyes (such as a carotid-cavernous fistula or cavernous sinus problem) usually only affect one eye so the fact that both eyes are red usually points to a more general problem like allergies or dry eyes or medication side effects.
