Do they put you to sleep or do they just numb your eyes during retinal detachment surgery?
It depends on the preferences of the surgeon and the patient. The local anesthesia injection was very effective at eliminating any sensation of pain for me during two retinal surgeries (ERM peels). Supplementary IV sedation can also be provided to reduce anxiety, to produce sedation, and to eliminate any memories of the surgery. General anesthesia might also be used for very anxious or uncooperative patients.
