Vision after full retina detachment

My son who is almost 5yr had full retina detachment. The surgery was done a week later of the detachment as the surgeon was out of town and he said since it is fully detached, there is no hurry to fix it right away.

My son got scleral buckle, vitrectomy with silicone oil done two weeks ago. One week post op appointment went well and doctor said it is all intact. We do not know much he can see from that eye as he is speech delayed. We are told not to let him sleep on his back with head straight until the oil is taken out.

My son has strabismus in eye that was detached and he was treated with patching good eye until the detachment happened. The surgoen said the retina had 15 tears but no damage to macula.

What are my hopes of his vision? will the reattachment stays?

Thank you all for your reply. My son has stickler syndrome and also has high myopia (7.5 & 8) so he wears glasses. Do not know how to protect his good eye because of his genetic disorder? He had prevent 360 laser done to both the eyes as doctor noticed thining of his eye. I do not know how to help him..

Your son probably has amblyopia  and probably will not have normal vision.  The silicone oil will have to be removed to have the best possible vision.

With a complete detachment of the retina the macula will be damaged. There may have been no breaks/tears on the macula itself, but it still detached, so unfortunately the final visual prognosis is going to be poorer than if the macula had not detached.

No one but your surgeon can tell you whether or not your son's retina will remain attached.

At this point, it's very important to make absolutely sure that nothing happens to his "good" eye. Have your son wear protective lenses and make sure that he gets annual eye exams.
