Thanks to you both for your observations. I value both of your comments immensely based on your previous posts.
I have the ReSTOR +3 in my left eye, and and after a discouraging start my distance and intermediate vision have both improved over the past couple of months -- especially so since my last LRI procedure. If I end of having to wear progressives at times, that's fine.
Last night my wife and I spent an hour reading Bible passages (for Lent), and I was pretty successful without corrective lenses. At this point I feel I've had a pretty good result with ReSTOR -- not perfect, but then I didn't expect it to be perfect.
As an aside: I know there have been many posts here about problems with the ReSTOR lens, but I'm pretty satisfied with it thus far.
Sometimes you have the opposite effect. You can get a hyperopic shift if the anterior capsule starts to contracts. This can be fixed with a Yag to the anterior capsule.

I did not improve, although my spherical equivalent has remained plano. A few weeks after cataract surgery, I was +.25 with .50 diopters of astigmatism (as measured by my optometrist). More than 4 years later, I am +.50 with 1.00 diopter of astigmatism (as measured by my optometrist). The change isn't huge (although my prescription is slightly stronger), and I can still read the 20/20 line on the chart without correction. Both my eyes have the same script. I have AcrySof IQ lenses. I had cataract surgery and limbal relaxing incisions in September 2006.
