Vitreous

I have floaters that just seem to keep getting worse.  I can actually see my vitreous when approaching cars headlights shine in my eyes.  It looks like snow falling in a circle around their headlights.  And its not just in one spot.  I can move my eyes and look again and its my whole vision does this.  If I squint I can see hundreds of floaters in one eye.  Not to mention that where there arent floaters there are little circles like I see in car's headlights.  Is my vitreous deteriorating that bad? What is happening?

After having a catract removed in my left eye two month ago, I am having the flasches and the floaters like you indicated. I went to my doctor rightaway. He says the vitreous is detaching. Also that there is somewhere around a 5% chance of a possible retinal tear or detachment, and that I have to be on look out for the next two weeks.

My question for the doctors is: Can something be done? Other than just wait for it to naturaly heal or detach. Can I have normal life? Exercise, walk, run, play sports, read, etc. without causing more harm. What about diet?

Dear Will101,

A sudden change in the number of floaters that one sees may indicate a retinal detachment.  Inflammation inside the eye is also a possibility. I would recommend that you seek the care of an eyeMD immediately.

I'm not really sure what to say other yes, you definitely have some problems with the vitreous and I am sorry for your problems.  You should see an ophthalmologist right away to further evaluate your problem.  Sometimes the floaters are essentially harmless and other times it can be related to serioius inflammation or bleeding in the eye and immediate attention, sometimes even surgery is needed for the more serious cases.
