Will call to make eye appt. tomorrow.  Okay,  saw my pcp this morning, he's screening me for diabetes (checking my A1c & thyroid--TS4 &something else to do with thyroid), & he's given me referral to neurologist (I already have appt scheduled)--chief complaint:  4 more than 12 wks have had increasing nerve pain in extremities & my diff extremities will be diff temps at diff times. Also having weird vision issues like double vision & weiss ring floaters that I've not had before.  Thoughts?

Double vision, meaning seeing two distinct objects that go away with one eye is closed is NOT a vitreous  PVD  Weiss ring symptom.   Both the neurologist and Eye MD can check on the double vision.  (ghosting is a one eye problem where the image is not truely double but has a ghost image around it).

Having a Weiss Ring associated with a posterior vitreous detachment is not a risk factor for more likely having a hole, tear, or RD than PVD not associated with Weiss Ring.   I have a Weiss Ring in my right eye and can see it as I type this response.  It's just bigger than your average floater or as I tell patients "Like a redwood tree in a pine tree forest.

Like all floaters most people either no longer see the WR when it drops to the bottom of the eye or due to neuroadaptation the brain "tunes the WR and other floaters out".

The WR is were the vitreous use to attach around the optic nerve.

Hi Dr. Hagan,

I am now 4 weeks cataract surgery post-op.  Finished my NSAID drops  and steroid drops.  Yesterday afternoon I noticed more floaters in the operated eye and in the evening I began to see a dark arc when I looked towards my nose and back.  I was afraid my retina was detaching, so I called my surgeon and he met me at his office after 8PM yesterday (Sunday).

He did a thorough dilated exam, both with the slit lamp and magnifier and with scleral depression and said no retina holes, tears or detachment.  I have a mild lattice.  He said he thought it was either the vitreous gel (I already knew I had PVD) or  that I started to see the edge of the lens since although some scar tissue has begun to form, there is still some movement in the bag.  He did not think it was negative dysphotopsia, since it is 4 weeks post-op and I was doing fine up until yesterday.

Well, when I got home I began to see what looked like floaters that I could see even when not looking at a bright background and now this morning since my pupil is no longer dilated I see a ring floater in that eye as well as more small floaters than I had before.  After reading posts on the site I'm thinking the round floater is a Weiss ring.

I have my 4 week post op appointment on Thursday with the surgeon.  Do you think I should call him and see him sooner?  Do you think I have developed a Weiss ring?
Since your symptoms have changed since the surgeon examined you it needs a call to the office to relay your new symptoms. If you see a large floater, that is round and moves and much larger than regular floaters it is usually a Weiss Ring.
Yes it is round and larger than regular string floaters and when I look peripherally it moves in that direction but I can still see it off to the side.  Why do you think it would appear after the dilated exam?
My surgeon got me in to see a retina specialist when I told him my symptoms.
The retina specialist did the full dilated exam and confirmed the Weiss ring and no retinal holes, tears or detachment.

He wants to see me in 1 month, then 3 months.

He also said they I should not move my eyes or head for the next week to the side quickly so the vitreous won't be pulled.

Now I'm wondering if I should drive for the next week.

Di you think it would be OK for me to drive?
You should ask the surgeon but its never a restriction I place on patients.

I have one large floater as a result of a Weiss Ring detachment in my right eye. Having been seen by an opthamologist and having 2 machine tests show no retina detachment (but, w/out dilating drops could not rule out any tear that can sometimes accompany Weiss ring detachments). Also, when in a darkish room, i see a crescent of light in the upper inner corner of my eye and one in the lower outer corner of my eye as i move my eye around. I am against having any dilating drops administered to my eye for further testing because of my suffering with server multiple chemical sensitivities. It has been three weeks since the onset of this problem. Should i expect there be less chance of my having a sever potential problem (retinal tear) from this as time goes on? I have noticed that my vision has changed slightly. In my right eye, it's gone from 20/20 to 20/25. Is this significant? Thank you, Deborah

Be sure your "doctor" is an physician Eye MD ophthalmologist. An optometrist is not a physician and has about half the training as an Eye MD

Yes, contact your doctor.  I don't know if your symptoms are significant, but it doesn't hurt to call and ask.
