Normally an opacified posterior capsule behind the intraocular lens implant is opened with a YAG laser. If the membrane is extremely thick or opaque, it would need to be removed with a vitrectomy procedure, which is done in an operating room, not the office. However, it would be very unusual to need a vitrectomy for posterior capsule opacification.
Hi Dr. Fazio,
Do you think my doctor mentioned vitrectomy because when he did the lens exchange he discovered missing zonule fibres and had to use a tension ring and 2 stitches. Could this be a reason why I may need a vitrectomy instead of yag?
