dangers of sunlight

This is a question for John Hagan:

You have written about the dangers of sunlight even on a cloudy day. What I dont understand is, what has changed that has caused humans to be so sensitive to sunlight?

My belief is that mother nature has provided protection for us from sunlight. We are originally hunter gatherers who spend most of our time outdoors in sunlight. Why do we need sunglasses for protection? Is it due to changes in the environment?

Are we mostly protected as long as we spend time in the shade or avoid bright sunlight?

Give me a break here:  If its a bright sunny day and you have to squint wear a hat and sunglasses. Anytime a fair complected person migh sunburn then eye protection is ideal.

so how would you define heavy indirect sunlight?

Or what conditions are acceptable without wearing sunglasses? Anywhere where it's shaded?

1. What is dangerous IS STARING DIRECTLY AT THE SUN. THAT WILL BURN OUT YOUR MACULA.
2. What is not good for the eye is many years of heavy indirect sunlight exposure: this increases the risk of cataract, marcular degeneration, pinguecula, ptyergia and eyelid skin cancers.
