Marijuana's Effect on Pinguecula/Ptygerium

Here's some background on me: I have been diagnosed with a nasal Ptygerium on my right eye. The Dr. seemed uneducated on these things. Mine has not invaded my cornea yet so I thought it was called a pinguecula. His response when I said this was "Well I use the word "Ptygerium" cause it's easier to pronounce." All i could say was WOW. Mine isn't that severe but it does bother me. I can feel it most of the time.

My Question is: Does smoking marijuana have an effect on these things??? It's well known that smoking pot causes bloodshot eyes, but will this further damage my eyes and worsen my Ptygerium???

that part of the eye between the caruncle and the eye ball is called the plica semilunaris. You need to get in to see an eye MD ophthalmologist for a definitive diagnosis. Ask your family MD to refer you or if you live in USA go to www.geteyesmart.org and find an Eye MD near you.

I know this does have any thing to do with this topic but I need help and am grasping out for it... Okay so there of course is the caruncle of the eye and the part I'm talking about is the outer most part that is closest to my nose.. That part. Well it stings when I rub it or when I go to get the sleep out of my eye. It it like a bump and it sticks out more that my normal other eye. My mom seems to think its a stye but I don't quiet think it is it is just one bum and it is on the part that I was talking about do you know what this is and how to treat it? And what I can to do prevent it please help. Thanks -candy

Yes it will be detrimental:

Weed will cause vascular congestion of the eyes and perhaps make it more apparent. Growth is usually caused by Uv damage from excessive sun exposure. You are right that if its NOT on the cornea ITS NOT A PTERYGIUM.  Find a new eye doctor, be sure its a eye MD ophthalmologist.

Stop the weed, its very hard on the lungs and will do little for your social development.

Hey Mike I'm 22 years old and have been smoking marijuana for about a year now. Between now and the time I've started smoking I have seen a dramatic change in my condition. I don't use any eye drops rarely so I even wear shades in the sun. My pterygium had gotten to the point where it was almost covering my pupil. Now it is barely touching my cornea. The only thing I have changed in the past year is started smoking I'm still outdoors all the time. So with my experience it seems that cannabis has actually helped my condition.

This is a very interesting post. I live in Canada and weed is pretty much legal and I smoke occasionally. I also have aptygerium on both eyes. Weed seems to relax my eyes and help with axiety about this disorder.

So the answer is? NO, It will not make it grow more? or YES it will?

I understand weed isn't the healthieast thing for you, but I would like a more clear answer. UV light will make it grow for sure. But will weed just irritate it? Or actually stimulate growth?

Thanks you for your reply. I have in fact "stopped the weed", due to this condition. I could argue about various studies on cannabis regarding lung health but I will not go into that. The fact is, smoking cannabis makes my "ping" more apparent so I have decided to stop. I will also find a new eye doctor. Thank you again for your reply! God bless.
