prisms/prescription

Hello Dr. Hagan,
This is my prescription for glasses after bilateral RD repairs, bilateral IOLs (Technis monofocals), and binocular hypertrophic strabismus secondary to one of the RD repairs. Can this amount of prism cause distortion even as it helps the diplopia? The lenses are quite thin, yet it feels like I am looking through dense glass, not cloudy glass, just dense. I remove them to read but find myself reading with just the left eye. The right eye has the muscle problem.

Thank you for any perspective on the prescription.

R -1.00  +0.50   055     Prism 8 down
L  -2.75   sph                Prism 7 up

Before any surgeries, I could read comfortably without glasses, and the prescription was:
R -2.50  -.25   120
L -4.00  -.25    180

Thank you for taking the time to respond and shed further light, Dr. Hagan.

I started out with a Fresnel on one lens, but at 15 diopters, it caused significant blur. That led to the ground-in prisms. Wearing either pair is aversive, but your response motivated me to compare them just now (the prescriptions do differ slightly independent of the prisms and because one is no-line and the other, single vision).  My BCVA is no longer 20/20 in either eye because of numerous complications, yet still pretty good. You have helped me prepare for my upcoming appt.
Thank you again.

Yes that is a lot of prism, it makes the glasses thick and anything over 3-4 diopters in one eye can cause problems with clarity. This is especially true if you remove the glasses close one eye then the other and things at near look bright and clear. You can discuss with your ophthalmologist. What is your vision with those glasses? If 20/20 during single eye testing the problem is almost certainly the prism. you might ask them about "Fresnel press on prism"
