retina specialist wants to laser lattice in both eyes

I had originally gone to the center fro Sight in Sarsota FL to have cataract surgery on my left eye.
After a thorough exam it was determined I had a tear in my right retina that had healed itself and lattice and some lattice in the left eye.  They would not do cataract surgery until I saw their retina Specialist, Dr. Brandon Parrott, due to risk of retinal detachment.
After seeing Dr. Parrot he confirmed the tear that had healed and all the lattice in both eyes...more than normal.
He encouraged having laser treatment on both eyes...4-6 weeks apart.
Since I am now paranoid about having cataract surgery, is it advisable to have these lattices treated with a laser ?
After reading this forum, it appears that laser surgery destroys healthy retinal tissue.
I am having PVDs in the left eye and the cataract is blurring my vision.
Thank you.  I am very confused.

If there were no retinal tear, then I would recommend leaving the lattice alone.  This is a controversial area, where some surgeons recommend treating the lattice and others do not.  You may want to obtain a second opinion from another retina specialist, perhaps at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.  Laser is applied around the area of lattice peripherally to prevent retinal tears in that area.  However, occasionally retinal tears develop in areas of the retina without lattice, and these are then treated with laser.

Thank you very much for your response.
Dr. Parrott was formerly at Bascom Palmer and just came to Sarasota.
He is the best in town.
The vision in the left eye is very poor.  I am having laser on the right eye (with healed tear) on Monday.  I have 4 weeks to think about the left eye.
It is very discouraging to have such poor visiion in the left eye and not have the courage to have cataract surgery because of the extensive lattice etc.
Thank you again...wish I knew what to do.
