swelling behind the eye

My partner has been told he has swelling behind the eyes his left eye has been affected the worse as he has hardly any vision.and the right is being controlled by steriods which is at its best at 16 tablets a day and worse on 6 tablets a day its been three years .we need some serious advise as nobody seems to know what is wrong.can you help or suggest who can. we are currently seing a prof still no answers just tests!

Just a quick question...Has he been checked for thyroid eye disease?

Thank you for your reply. Our MD said the same as you.It all seems so complicated .i dont think we could benefit from a second opinion as we have seen all the eye doctors in our area and they all say the same and pass us on.So i guess he'll have to stay a guinipig for a while! Some causes of swelling of the retina are very difficult to diagnose or are "idiopathic" which means the cause is unknown. You could ask your present eye MDs for a second opinion, or seek out a retinal specialist on your own for another opinion.
