I DON'T know, some say glasses are made for prescriptions from +50 to -60 but I DON'T think people accually have it that bad. By the way, I got glasses at the age of 2 and my prescription has been going down ever since. I'm 15 now, and my prescription is +9! So I was probably like over +20 when I was 2. So don't feel bad (and give your Docter the finger!)
The = just means I've read the discussion to date and have no more to comment. Software Developer gave you a lot of good information.
omg thank u so much. since last night, I been crying like crazy. I am 20 years old but I still have a kid's heart. I thought I will go blind. my dad was also - 11.00 before he got lazik. he said I will get lazik next year. but I was panicking
I should add that in the incredibly unlikely case someone needs even stronger correction than what available eyeglasses or contacts could provide by themselves, people can always combine wearing contacts and glasses to get even stronger correction. They can also consider laser vision correction or lens implant surgery to correct part of their vision while wearing lenses for the rest. It is incredibly unlikely you'd ever need to resort to such things, the point is merely that being myopic by itself isn't going to leave you blind, even if it is inconvenient to deal with. It puts you at slightly higher risk of some conditions that are sight-threatening, but it isn't likely you will have one of those and if you do it isn't likely you'd lose your sight.
You don't say what your age is. Most people even with high myopia see their vision stabilize, as this doctor at the geteyesmart.org site referred to above explains:
http://www.geteyesmart.org/eyesmart/ask/questions/high-myopia.cfm
"High myopia is generally defined as nearsightedness requiring a glasses correction of -6.00 diopters or more and is sometimes referred to as degenerative myopia or pathological myopia. In this condition the growth of the eye will generally stabilize between 20 to 30 years of age. "
The odds are that your vision is either fairly stable now, or will stabilize. So there is a good chance your vision hasn't gotten too much worse. The fact that you have been able to go that long without going back to the doctor suggests your vision is probably not that much worse than your old prescription. It is unlikely you would have trouble getting glasses/contacts.
Many high myopes find contacts give them better vision than glasses, and they sell even pre-made contacts in some brands up to -20 (though -12 is more common) and go up higher in custom made contacts. I suspect even with glasses that there are labs that will go up higher than the -25.
As the doctor mentions, you are at greater risk of other eye problems due to being highly myopic, but even most highly myopic people don't develop those problems so there is no reason to fear the worst. There is reason to make sure to have a doctor check your eyes just in case though, since some of the problems he mentions can be treated better if they are caught early.
Being highly myopic doesn't mean your eye is "weak", it merely means the lens power of your eye focuses light at the wrong place. Actually it means the lens power of your eye is too strong, which is why they use a negative lens, -10, to reduce it. You are nearsighted, so you see very close up things very well instead of seeing distant things well, and lenses are needed to correct that.
There are many people who are highly myopic, even if the % is low. For instance if only 1 out of 100 people had an issue, in the US that would still be millions of people, and tens of millions globally. It is nothing you did wrong so try not to let what anyone says make you feel bad. Many people wear glasses or contacts, the major impact this has is on how strong your glasses are.
The use of the phrase "pathological" seems to differ among doctors. Although those doctors are referring to your level of myopia as "pathological", other literature I recall seeing on the net (as a high myope before surgery I paid attention to this) didn't seem to automatically label myopia that high as necessarily "pathological". Some doctors seem to reserve the phrase "pathological myopia" to refer to myopia that continues worsening even beyond the normal age at which vision stabilizes, which isn't common and there is no reason to fear the worst. I suspect since those doctors are using "pathological myopia" to refer to high myopia, that they use "degenerative myopia" to refer to myopia that continues to to worsen.
I am going for eye check up on Wednesday but I am scared. I was on google searching for highest eye glasses prescription and I have came across -25.00 but I won't go blind right?
You have a disease: pathological high myopia. Many problems such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and retinal detachment are much more common in people with this degree of myopia. You need to find yourself another ophthalmologist that you get along with. I have taken care of people with glasses RX of -18.00. You need your eyes examined yearly. If you live in USA find an ophthalmologist at website www.geteyesmart.org or elsewhere ask your family MD to refer your. PLEASE ACT ON THIS>
