Hi,
is a period from 6-8 days still considered normal if there
is no pain or excessive bleeding involved ?
I had a long period for all my life even throughout the years
when I took the pill.

Regards,
Judith

I also had a tubal back in Nov. 2000. My cyle was exactly 28 days. I could have made bets on it. But then July 2001, my period never came. Finally in October 2001 I went to the doctor and he gave me some meds and my period come in about 15 days. It only lasted 3 days which in not normal for me, mine has always been 5 days.  Anyway, It is now Jan. 4, 2002 and I still haven't had a period yet.  My doctor said it was from my tubal.  So, what's the deal,  do I have to go to the doctor every month to get my period now.

I could use some advice. My cycle has always been very predictable(21 days). However since the birth of my last child I have not had anything close to a normal cycle and that has been 7 months. (This was an easy birth) I have had constant spotting since then with short periods of heavier bleeding. At first I contributed it to an unusual post partum. 2 months after the birth I had a tubal ligation, so then I figured maybe something had been disturbed during surgery and would correct itself. That's been 5 months. The irregularities still continue accompanied by constant fatigue and sleep problems. I do not know if these syptoms could all be related or if they are just coincidental. I would appreciate any help.

You periods may, in fact, be normal. While there is a very wide range of what is considered "normal", essentially the regularity of the periods you describe do not likely have any affect on your ability to become pregnant. Has your partner had a semen analysis done? Getting to the bottom of the problem of infertility involves extensive evaluation of both the male and female.

A very common cause of irregular or heavy periods is polycystic ovarian disease. This is VERY COMMON.
Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a disease of reproductive age women marked by irregular, infrequent menses (oligomenorrhea) and/or lack of menstruation (amenorrhea).  This condition may be also marked by infertility, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, abdominal pain, obesity, hirsuitism (excessive hairiness), enlarged ovaries, acne or deepening of the voice.  Laboratory diagnosis will reveal elevated LH (leutenizing hormone) and somewhat low FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) as well as increased testosterone, increased estrone, progesterone and dihydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Other blood tests including serum glucose (to rule out diabetes) or a "dexamethasone suppression test" (to rule out Cushing's disease) should be considered by the physician examining the patient with presumed PCOD.  Ovaries may be enlarged with a smooth glistening capsule and pelvic ultrasound will reveal enlarged ovaries with one or more associated cysts. Several treatments are availiable. If large cysts are present and are causing abdominal pain, laparascopic removal of these cyst(s) may be indicated. Provera (progesterone) may be prescribed to stimulate cyclic withdrawl bleeding or low dose oral contraceptive may be prescribed to help return menses to a "regular" pattern. You should see your doctor to have a pap as well. Most women with polycystic ovarian disease respond very well to treatment with an oral contraceptive (OC). One I have used and have had very good results with is an OC known as "Desogen"

I have regular cycle, but I get normal bleeding on first day then on second day very less. If I get less on first day then it is normal on second day and completely stop on third day. Is this normal cycle? Will this cycle effect my fertility? As I would like to concieve a child but could not be preganent from one year of marriage. I did all harmonal tests and the report is ok. Please advise me if any cause of unfertility so far.
Thank you so much in advance and looking forward your response asap.

Thank you for your question and for visiting the Family Practice Forum.
If these periods are "regular" and you have a regular cycle of approximately 28 days, this may indeed be normal. The average menstrual period for women is 3-5 days with a cycle occurring every 28 days. The fact that your period is only 2-3 days in duration may be entirely normal. Most birth control pills will tend to shorten the duration of women's periods as well as make the periods, themselves less "heavy".
If your periods are irregular or are particularly painful, in addition to getting your regular "pap" test, your doctor may need to consider ordering a pelvic ultrasound to check for abnormalities such as fibroids and/or ovarian cysts.
Feel free to submit more information (as a comment).
Let me know if I can be of further help!
My best to you!
