Beta is 17 :(

They said I may have a "chemical pregnancy".... what the heck!!!! So they want me to continue to take the progesterone supositiries and have another blood work on Friday. They like to see a beta of at least 50.

Maybe the egg did not implant. OMG!!!!! This is so nerve racking!!.

Hope your test went well today. I had my beta today and it's 18. I need to go back on Sunday. Trying to stay positive and hope the numbers go up. Completely understand the "nerve racking" part. I was hoping for a simple, "Yes, you're pregnant and everything will be fine." There doesn't seem to be any relaxing point until you actually have a baby in your arms. All the best.

Hang in there, Mariana! I had a chemical pregnancy and can tell you that they don't last very long. I basically only knew I was pregnant for 2 days, then I felt all symptoms disappear and when I went for a beta it was only stinking 5 :( So I don't think this is the case for you. Stay strong and enjoy your turkey!!!

I'm not sure if you know my story, but I thought maybe it would help in thinking about how much you take what a doctor or nurse says to heart.  They are NOT all knowing.  They want to put every pregnancy in a neat little box and have them all be exactly the same, but truth of the matter is we are ALL different!  For the same reason that some women ovulate on day 10, some like me ovulate day 19-21, and some eggs take 4 days to implant, while others take 12.  Every pregnancy is also different.  Some women have astronomical HCG with singletons, and others have low HCG levels and have perfectly healthy pregnancies.

When I went in at 6wks 1 day for an u/s, they saw nothing but a big empty gestational sac.  No fetal pole or yolk sac.  He asked if we'd done any fertility treatments, and I said no - I just had ovarian drilling in July to get me to ovulate on my own.  He said by now they should've seen something, that it must be a blighted ovum and that he saw another blob that looked like loose blood and miscarriage was eminent.  I was supposed to continue to "act" like I was pregnant just in case, but he expected me to start bleeding any second.

I went home devastated.  I didn't even know this was possible because my numbers all along had been 2-3x what they were expected to be.  But I began to read encouraging story after story of women who were misdiagnosed with miscarriage - who went back a week later and saw a heartbeat.  I had blood drawn the next day and my numbers were once again through the roof as they had been all along.  Tripled instead of doubled.  I asked my doctor if there was ANY hope because I'd read about all these women being misdiagnosed - he said "Absolutely not.  If your numbers are that high (18,000's) then we DEFINITELY should've seen something the day before".  So 6 days after the first u/s we went back expecting to be told the worst.  Well, not only was there a perfect beating heart, but TWO more sacs!  That must've been the blob he saw the week before that he thought was loose blood.  Apparently I ovulated 3 times all on my own!

Fortunately the other two did not develop into anything, but it just goes to show that my doctor was SO certain I was going to miscarry - and he was COMPLETELY, 100% wrong!  As someone on this forum put it... "worst upset in woman vs. ultrasound history"  They don't know everything!

I know it is difficult but you need to stop stressing yourself out.  That is the absolute worst thing you could do for your baby right now.  Generally ectopic's don't necessarily have low numbers off the bat, they have SLOW RISING numbers.  Your beta was FINE and I don't think there is anything to worry about just yet.  You won't have any idea how quickly they are rising until Friday - so just TRY TRY TRY to relax until then.  Be happy!  You're pregnant!  A single HCG level is impossible to determine where a pregnancy is going, and for a first beta, I still think 17 is a perfectly good number.  I'm cursing that nurse you spoke to.

amiguita,  if you keep reading things on the web (although I do that too, lol) you will go insane and this two days will be just awful...I know that you are probably preparing youself for the worst, but maybe you are just early...what DPO are you now?...maybe implantation occur later and who knows....like I said on my previous post, numbers need to start somewhere....hopefully your lucky start was at 17!!

I will keep praying for double numbers on Friday....stay strong and positive.

My beta was at a 10 on my first test, they brought me back in two days later and it was at a 38 and they were thrilled with it and considered it pregnant!  We'll pray that your beta doubles, I think that is what they look for...

I was devastated after my first beta too and I know its hard to stay positive...

I'm wondering if I have an ectopic pregnancy since we had intercourse in between the retreival and the transfer.... and if they did not take all the eggs out and i got pregnant the normal way maybe the egg got stuck on the fallopian tube???? Im reading online and it says that sometimes a small beta could mean an ectopic

Personally, I would be THRILLED with a 17!!!  I think that is a perfectly fine first beta!  Anything above a 10 is considered pregnant - you're pregnant!!!  It makes me a little angry that they told you that and might have you worry unnecessarily.  I have a feeling everything will be just fine.  Hang in there!
