Can't get my period after D&C and Prometrium

My husband and I are ready to have a baby. After 14 years on the pill, I came off in June, got pregnant right away and then miscarried at 6 weeks. My D&C was on Aug 30. I didn't bleed more than a day. Never got my period. Saw the doc on Oct 13 and did blood work and started Prometrium 400mg for 10 days to induce period. Finished Prometrium on Oct 22. Today is Nov 3 and still no period. My doc said I should get my period within a few days of stopping the Prometrium. Data for Prometrium says should get a period within 7 days. It's now been 12 days since stopping the Prometrium. The bloodwork showed hCG level at 1, TSH at 1.32 and Prolactin at 8.9. Appears no tissue left behind. Is there anything else I should be doing besides waiting impatiently?

I am also in this boat.  I have never had a period except when I was on the pill.  After I went off the pill, no period.  My  husband and I started trying last November.  I was put on Clomid in September with no luck.  My concern is that the doctor hasn't monitored at all, nor has he offered estrogen or shots to aid the Clomid.  Any suggestions on what I may want to suggest to him when I meet with him on Monday?
Thanks!

Thanks for all of your support. I have great news. Well, I'm not pregnant, but I did get my period. I'm in Europe on vacation and I just finished a full 6 days of period!!! I never in a million years thought I'd be so happy to see my period. It's great news. I spoke to my doctor. She says I can still have the HSG if I want but that the period was a great sign and it's my decision. I think I'm going to skip it. I could potentially be ovulating at the time it's scheduled and I don't want to lose out on any opportunities. Thanks again for all of the advice and support. Maybe I just needed to get away to and get give my racing mind a break : )
mhv...I contacted someone through the Asherman's site for physician referrals in my area and got a whole list on email. Thanks anyway.

The good thing is that you ladies are taking your medical care into your own hands!  Alot of woman don't, and end up waiting a long time for someone to actually listen to them and get the help they deserve and need.  You ladies are being proactive and that's the first step!  Court,if you would like to know the name of a doctor that specializes in Ashermans/uterine surgery  that is the closest to you (although there aren't that many around), you can let me know if you would like.

Hello. I am in that unlucky boat. It has been three months since my D&C. I had very little bleeding directly after the D&C and that stopped the same day.  I starting getting intense pains 4/5 weeks after the procedure and have been getting them every month since, but still no period.

I have to go to one of the specialist recommended through this site. The hospital in charge of my care has out right refused to look in to Asherman's and told me it is impossible for me to have it from the D&C.

I hope things turn out ok for you. ^_^

I am also glad to hear that your doctor took you seriously on this.  So many ladies are chuckled at or led away from researching scaring.  I am glad to hear that your doctor is open minded. : )

An HSG will show Ashermans.  They run dye down your tubes into your uterus.  If you have scaring, the fluid will show it.  It's a slightly uncomfortable test, but if you take 600-800mg of ibuprofen before you should be fine.  The 22nd is right around the corner, so you should have answers soon.  Please let us know how your test goes ok?!?!?  You should have an answer immediatly as you will be able to see the results on the monitor as the test is performed.

Don't forget to update us ok???

Spoke to my doctor. Her first suggestion was to do an HSG to rule out Ashermans. I'm scheduled for Monday, Nov 22. What should I expect from the procedure? Also, is it easy to diagnose Ashermans from an HSG? Can I trust that it's clearly either a yes I have it or no I don't or is it more complicated than that?

Hi Court,

After 2 surgeries (the first one was a waste because my Dr. didn't remove any of the scarring - just poked a hole in it to let the menstrual blood through and it quickly adhered back together. He was in total denial that i had any problems), I have finally gotten the green light to conceive (my last surgery was Sept 17). Scarring is now gone and my uterus is good. Can't wait to start trying again and get back on the bandwagon however, i have read about tons of success stories after scarring so I'm really hopeful! Good luck to you!

Thanks for sharing your story especially since you had such a similar experience with really no bleeding post-d&c and not a lot of pain. In answer to your question, I don't recall any pain or period-like cramping. And, I've been very carefully monitoring my body and examining my toilet paper for any sign of color (sorry to be gross). I will keep you posted. Thanks again. Just curious, what was your outcome with regards to getting pregnant once you had the scar tissue removed?

HI Court,

I had the same exact thing happen to me. I had a DNC at 8 weeks pregnant. I had hardly any bleeding after the DNC. The dr. told me I should expect my period at about 4 weeks later. At 4 weeks later, i had some mild period like cramping but no bleeding. 5 weeks later, i went to my dr who did an ultrasound and said everything was fine and i was probably not getting a period due to stress. 8 weeks later, i started to get really intense period crampng that quickly turned into awful abdominal pain but no blood. I went back to my dr who did another ultrasound and saw blood clots in my uterus. I had scarring near my cervix that was blocking my menstrual flow. i ultimately needed to get surgery to remove scarring. I don't want to scare you at all, but PLEASE get this looked at. it's very rare for someone that had a DNC in early pregnancy to take over 9 weeks to have a period especially when given prometrium. try to get into see your dr before you leave the country if you can. Get an HSG or a saline sono (as MHV mentioned). this will give you some answers. Have you had any pain or period like cramping at all? keep us posted and if there is anyway i can help or if you have more questions, let me know.  good luck?

Thanks for all the info. I am going to try to be patient. My doc is not in the office again until next week. I will call and see what she says. Then my husband and I leave for Europe next Friday and don't get back until the weekend before Thanksgiving. I will see what the doc says next week and maybe get something scheduled for the week we return so that I can have peace of mind while I'm away knowing that we're covering all bases. And, maybe by then, I will have gotten my period : )
Thanks again for your input. I will keep you posted.

Well, the only way you could see the scarring is if they did a hcg, or a sis.  it wouldn't show on during a normal exam, or on a normal ultrasound.  It could be asherman's still, but it's hard to tell. I kept having my period w/asherman's, but it was just much lighter.  I am not even sure how I got it. anyway, I, myself, think it's just better to be safe then sorry.  I don't want you to get in a tizzy either.  Did you tell your doctor that you haven't started since the prometrium?   If they try to put you on birthcontrol or something that makes you keep waiting,  I would tell them that I want the HSG or the SIS, just to ease my own mind.  It very underdiagnosed, and alot of doctors will try to steer you away from it being a possibility, unfortunately.  I am not saying that this is what you have please know that... I'm just trying to help you cover all of your bases!
Please let me know.

After the D&C, I barely bled at all and had virtually no cramping starting the day after the procedure. My doc did a pelvic exam on Oct 13 and he said everything felt and looked normal. That's when she put me on the Prometrium. Without cramping or pain, could it still be Ashermans? Is it too early (9 weeks since D&C and almost 2 weeks since finishing Prometrium) to start with an HSG? My patience is worn thin but I also don't want to get myself in a tizzy and stress out about it. That definitely won't help.

You may want to ask your doctor to do an HSG or an Saline Induced Sonohystogram, just to rule out scarring from your dnc.  This scarring (also known as Ashermans) can prevent periods.  Have you had any cramping or pain during when you should be getting your period?

Please let me know what you find out.

Good Luck,

Melissa
