Egg retrieval procedure

Hi, I am nervous about egg retrieval. Is the procedure painful? From 1 to 10 how much pain do you experience? After the procedure do you bleed and if so for how long? Do they put the anesthesia in your arm or in the actual ovary? Please all your comments are welcomed.

i had retrival yesterday..6th december.. and i was petrified!!!!..im a panic attack sufferer .. and just walking in the theatre my heart was pumping like there was no tomorrow.. they put in the iv and some drug to relax me.. and i tried to get my breathing under control.. since i knew i couldnt escape now..before i knew it they were placing one leg in a padded stirrup.. and that all i remember. i woke up ten minutes later.. feeling great.. but definately in pain.. not unbarable but definately "there".. especially on my right side.. even today i have a little pain.. so im hoping its gone by tomorrow so i can go back to work.. but in the mean time im just nervous now.. waiting to see how many of the 7 eggs have been fertilised

Wow..all sounds very interesting.  I am scheduled for my retrival 11/30 and I am really nervous.  I have never been put to sleep before and I keep thinking I am going to die under the anestheisa.  I am really freaking out about that part.  The needles I think I can handle.

Thanks everyone~ The comments are very helpful, I don't start injections until about the 1st of August.

My hubby's latest come on line is "hey baby, wanna save five grand?". LOL. therefore we had a really good "score" as far as our BD days go this month (every day over the 3 before, day of and day after ovulation - woohoo!). Nothing like a financial incentive ..... This sounds like a great way to spend my August Holidays!

Well I guess I am the exception to the rule because I had a retrieval today and true enough I was out during the procedure, but I have been in pain ever since I woke up.  I feel bloated, and like something wants to fall out of me.  Best of luck to you though.

Was your husband allowed to be in with you during the procedure?  Also, were you "out of it?" when you woke up (like a wisdom tooth extraction) or did you just get up and go?

Hi,
I started Lupron on 06/06 and then Gonal F on 06/08. I am handing the injections okay. I hope to respond well to the meds so we can continue with the ER. Good luck to you too.

Wow, this was all good to know.  I am very scared of the egg retrieval!  I've been nervous thinking about it, but since u guys say it's not so bad I have a little peace of mind.  I am also really scared of the injections which I start next weekend....

Hi

I am now on Lupron and should have my retrieval this month.  I have a huge fear of needles and they could not do my IUI because of that.  In April my RE did a mock retrieval and I did not feel a thing.  They had the IVF drip and I was out in 30 seconds and the next thing I knew I was being wheeled back to the recovery room.

When do you start your stims ?  Good luck

I did the egg retrieval almost two weeks ago and it didn't hurt at all.  Much easier than all the injections.  They gave me an iv and I don't remember anything.  Afterwards I was fine.  I was worried about the transfer because I would be awake, but they gave me a valium and it was fine.  Really similar to a pap smear.  Now I'm just waiting for the results...

Good luck ladies with your retrival. Had my 1st retrival this May I was out like a light after they started my IV, seemed like only seconds had passed and I was in recovery. Had only mild discomfort that day and alittle sore the next. My sister had retrival last Oct. and she was awake, she said it was uncomfortable but not painful. Don't get yourselves to worked up, it is not as bad as you have worked up in your mind. (Atleast that was my case) Hope you ladies get lots of embies and a BFP! GOOD LUCK!!!

Hi first of all GOOD LUCK !!! My egg retrieval was a breeze they put the iv in my left hand it was a little larger than normal but they put some sort of jelly substance on it and my hand went totally numb it was a little pressure ( very little ) while the iv was going in a flat 30 seconds i was gone what seemed like 2 seconds later i was in the recovery room ! Later that day i felt like i had ate a huge meal i felt very full not pain just  little discomfort and bloating ! The next day i was like normal apart from the bloating its not a big deal ! My transfer was also a breeze it lasted like 20 mins and i had more painful cramping than my period only while the transfer was going on nothing after  ! I took a valium before my transfer ( i was a mess ) i also did acupuncture before and after transfer i would defineitly recommend it to you !

Hi! I had my first egg retrieval in April. I was very nervous just like you. Its normal. For me it was very uncomfortable in the beginning. I was given a valium before the procedure and then the put pain meds in my arm through an IV. It took awhile for them to kick in so I was awake through the first part and that was quite painful. After a couple of minutes though I was out and the next thing I knew I was waking up in another room. I know one of my friends had the same thing and she ended up awake through all of it and said it was extremely painful. It all depends on how you react to medications. Afterwards I had very minimal bleeding. I did end up developing OHSS though, which was painful and uncomfortable. That was due to the fact that I had 24 follicles. I wish you the best of luck. It is all worth it in the end!
