How to take clomid

E33
Hi Ladies,

I've been checking out this forum for a few weeks now, and you all seem incredibly supportive of each other.  Im looking forward to your feedback....

My doctor has given me a prescription to clomid and Im supposed to take two a day for 5 days starting whenever (100 total) . I forgot to ask him if I take one in the morning and one at night or both in the the morning or both at night.... I've left him a message but in the mean time I thought I'd ask you guys since you seem to know lots and lots.

Im nervous to take the clomid... it's my first leap into fertility treatment...(15 months ttc) but at the same time Im excited at the thought of actually ovulating.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Erika

Hi there - hope all is well...
got my results yesterday not overjoyed but im optomistic. So is my dh he came with me   :)   ... for a while now my GP doc has said you may... have PCOS... i didnt think i did because i didnt seem to have any symptoms except obesity and ive always had irregular periods. Yesterday though the gyno confirmed that i do. All my results were ok except i have cysts on my ovaries, no dominant follicles and insulin intolerance. My uterus and endometrium were normal and my left ovary ok. My right ovary was higher and alot larger. He's prescribed Metformin 500mg 2x daily and i have to see him in 4 months. i also have to do bloods for 2 months on day 21 and have some more ultrasounds ina few months. Can metformin actually help you conceive though or does it just correct my problems? Ill have to google it and have a read up! Im alright though, a perfect blood count and ultrasound wouldve been better but at least we now know what stopping us with ttc. Itl happen when the time is right i suppose!
Hows everything with you!

ok ok - this will be too much info but theres no other way to explain it... sorry girls :)  i havent bled at all during sex or excercise like you but I used to have EXTREME periods so much so that I would sometimes have to stay home from work because I would be in such a mess literally changing every 20mins or so... It was awful... they used to last from a week to a month/6 weeks and would be heavy the entire time but i didnt get them monthly but maybe 2-3 times a year. although im still way over weight i was even heavier then which may have caused it, dont know - know doc ever really gave me any real help or did any tests... dont think they believed me... i got sent to a gyno before we were ttc and he just said loose weight then come back and see me. easier said than done but anywho.... my predicament now is that i have had gastric lap banding which has been somewhat a helping hand/ somewhat a burden and have lost nearly 40kgs and my period seems to be a little more regular sorta although i dont seem to be ovulating. its not a set cycle but usually falls within each calander month and my period tends to last from 3-7 days now and isnt too heavy which is better for me now (lifesytle wise). we just really want a baby and its frustrating thats its not happening... you spend all your life thinking about af waiting for it too come, worrying about contraceptives etc etc not wanting to fall pregs yet and then you do  a complete turn and the af is the one thing you dread each month because that means again it hasnt happened... but tomorrow will tell me the type of road we have ahead.. tomorrow is test result day.. got my u/s xrays today the report stated the following. any insight would be helpful (i know its 2moro but my heads ticking over!!)
uterus - normal anteverted
endometrium - 5mm (double layer thickness) normal morphology
left ovary - 10cc, multiple small follicles distributed throughout the ovary, no dominant follicle seen
right ovary - only suspected visibility, 33cc, not well demonstrated but appears larger in size than the left. although indistinct this likely represents an ovarian cyst.
please review in 2-3mths time

do u think he will still put me on hormones like he said 2moro? i suppose time will tell and it probably depends on my blood tests results too ey... mmmm.... the waiting game... i am so impatient hehehe i want to know now!! bring on 2moro... good or bad at least we will know what we can do ... thats good... xx

Hi, I am starting chlomid tomorrow... 50 mg 2 pills.. and on cd 13 i go in for a shot.  I was wondering if anyone had actually had any luck.. the shot is gonadtropin/novarel.  I have comp[leted 2 surgeries within the past 4 monmths.. first one for fibroid ( i was diganosed with pcos too) and second one a few weeks ago for a septum removal.. ive been pregnant 4 times and theyve all been ectopic, but my dr says my right tube is kind of clear.  So shes trying this way since its so much cheaper than going IUI or IVF...Im so excited, but trying no to be since I dont want to have my hopes shattered.. yet again.... I too am considered (obese) yea the title is great, ive heard the chlomid doesnt work as well on people that are categorized as obese.
Im so scared yet kinda hopeful of things to come, I am 37 so im getting up there in age and I dont have any kdis and i erally want.. atr least one... id be happy with just one.  I was just kinda curious if anyone had been in my situation that had gotten pregnant.

so here's a little bit more about my situation wlo boring you too much.... I have been pregnant before, but I was probably about 15 lbs lighter.  At the time, we were so not ready, so we terminated the pregnancy.  Now it's 3 years later and are ready ready. About two years ago I stopped getting periods for about 6 months out of the year, and then I would have regular periods for the other 6 months. This past May, I started bleeding very heavily... it sounds similar to what you went through Diva, so I had an hysteroscopy and the doctor said.. polyps.. you have to have a d and c.  So I did that at the end of June. Since then I have not had one single day when i haven't spotted or bled.  But the funny thing is, it's not like menstrual blood... it's thin and bright red.  I especially bleed when I have sex...which has put a damper on the old sex life.  Have either of you experienced this kind of bleeding?  The doctor thinks that the clomid will balance it out, but i just have a funny feeling that this bleeding may not be what he thinks it is since I bleed heavily when I have sex or exercise.  ugh. TMI, I know, but maybe you could shed some insight.
Tomorrow I will call the doctor and get a copy of my hormone test results faxed to me so that I can start to really learn about my levels.  Oh, and Ill call the insurance company about an RE too.  jeez... so much to do.

thanks for the support..

dont worry im just learning too as we go its hard my dh sometimes thinks im crazy! im 27 and im taking all these meds even my mother says that back than she never heard of anything like this..my sister too like my dh thinks im crazy but nobody really understand unless they go tru it themself..ya know..i ve tried too to lose weight but its hard for women that have PCOS..sometimes you dont even know you have it ...ive always have my periods every month but i dint know i never ovulated so PCOS comes and at the same time it can go away but its a struggle getting preg. i thought once i got married i was going to have a honeymoon baby but when it dint happend i started seeying doctors..my insurance dosent cover any infertility treatmeants so im paying everything out of pocket and its hard but i want to get at the bottom of this and find out whats wrong with me...and i think we finally found out women with high prolactin levels dont get preg. so im hoping that with this new meds that im now taking i will be ready to ttc next round with injections followed by IUI i dont want to waste time and to clomid and time intourcouse forget it i just want a baby..and i will pay money for it if i have to!! lol everytime i say this my dh get scared he says i look mean lol damn hormones!!
ahhaa  i honestly would tell you like a sister to go see an RE instead of the OB if you can ull get more answers! let me know what happens ok ...and if u need anything feel free to ask
GOOD LUCK.

Elisa.

I will do. Im hoping it may just be a hormone imbalance of some type? The radiographer said my uterus and ovaries 'appear' normal but I suppose time will tell once the docs have had a look at it. Before I lost weight and properly started ttc, my GP ran some tests and said I potentially had PCOS also (I was super obese, 140kgs, now Im sitting at about 100kg - im still classed as very obese - isnt that nice to have such a wonderful title! not...) I have always had irregular periods also. This year they seem to be relatively normal 18-40days apart but last year for example I had about 3 periods that lasted for around a month and nearly made me bed ridden. Im anxious, excited and a bit worried about friday but I have to get the results sometimes and my dh and I are positive itl all be ok. Has anyone had the lap banding weight loss surgery here and been pregnant or trying ttc that you know of? I had it in Feb 2005. Cheers lovely ladies! Lorri xx

My goodness ladies,
Its unbelievably comforting to hear that we are in similar situations since I am the first of my friends going through this and no one has any 'life experience' kind of input.

Last week my doctor gave me a pamphlet on pcos... but the truth is, they have already looked into this, I don't have any cysts on my ovaries, no strange hair growth, no acne... etc ... i just don't get my period OR I bleed non stop.  ugh.

I think I will contact my insurance company and see what they cover in terms of an RE... I haven't even done that yet.

I have held out all this time on taking the clomid because I thought if I just lose some weight....  ugh ugh.  What a struggle.  I too had a DandC for polyps, this past June.  My doctor gave me the prescription and said, I'll see you in 3 months.

Want2beMama, I admire how informed you are on prolactin levels... and hormone levels, I don't know any of that stuff yet, and don't even feel ready to take it on.  It sure does help to hear your experience.

So I just took my first dose and we'll see what happens.  Diva_Lorri, keep us posted on how your tests go!

hey Erika,
i went tru the same thing i like you im very obese..i have been TTC for 1 yr now, last sept. after i got married i was bleeding abnormal and i started seeying an OB after some testing done i was dx with PCOS (Insulin resistant) i was put on metformin for it and i managed to lose like 22lbs after that i still wasent getting preg. so we did some more testing and in Jan. i underwent a D&C due to polyps blockege in my uters, just in april i did my frist round of clomid thas when my OB said take this and ill see you in 1 month..and from what i was reading here most womes that are on clomid are monitored by their Doctors so i decided to see an RE he also gaved me clomid and i would go back on cd14 for u/s followed by trigger shot i did it for 4 months with no results..i got blood work done one day and i discovered i had high prolactin level (its a pregnancy hormone) that if its now low my chances of getting preg. are slim to none so i got put on meds for this just 2 weeks ago and i will be doing another blood work in 4 weeks to see if the meds are helping..after this i will try to to injections..i went to an RE just beacuse they use a different approach than OBs and i dint want to waste anymore time..minding you im only 27 and undergoing all this and i also had to get MRI to rule out pituatiry tumor and im still waiting for the results..so GOOD LUCK..and keep us posted.

hi erika
you sound as though you are at exactly the same stage of this journey as me. I am seeing my gyno/obst this fri to get my 'ultrsound/ bloodtests results' and get my prescription (probably for clomid - i too dont appear to be Ovulating). I too am obese (even after loosing 40kgs!) and am having a great amount of difficulty. My dh and I are praying that it is something that can be easily manipulated/ resolved to get us pregnant! Best of luck to you. Lorri West Aust

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for all of the input and encouragement.  Want2BeMama, yes, my OB is giving me the clomid.  He just ran my hormones and says all is 'normal' so it's not necessary to see an RE.  Does that make sense?

Jules_za, I think he put me on the higher dose because I have been bleeding non stop for 4 weeks now.  Sometimes it's heavy, and sometimes its light... he feels because of my weight (im considered obese) I have too much estrogen and the clomid will induce the ovulation and stop the bleeding while also giving me a better shot of getting pregnant.

Thanks ladies, it's nice to be a part of a conversation...outside the doctors office ;)

I took mine at bedtime at the same time CD 3-9 I've never heard of a DR. saying take it whenever.  Hope this helps.  Oh and I got my BFP last month on 150mg of clomid unfortuatly it ended last week in MC but I pray that clomid does the trick for you.

I take 50mg from CD5-9, same time every day.  On day 21 I did the 21 day progesterone test, which said yes I ovulated and therefore did not need a higher dose (would be really scared of a multiple pregnancy on a higher dose).  Why did ur dr put you straight onto 100mg? Still trying, but it worked for me with my DD. Goodluck.

i dont know what to tell you about the two pills and clomid really, but i can tell you that it does work. my first pregnancy, i got pregnant, with the first try. and right now, as i type this, i may be pregnant the second time with the first try again. on 50mg. mine was one pill a day for five days. i took it whenver i choose, but everyday at the same time. good luck! maybe if you research online, you could get the answer.

hey Erika,
every doctor does it differently is this ur OB? when i was first given clomid by my OB he told here take this and ill see u in 1 month..i was like ok? anywas to make a long story short i went to see a RE who also gived me clomid and told me to take it from days 5-9 i was only taking one a day 50mg at the beggining..so im guessing ur taking 100mg so you take both pills at the same time..and to get less side effects i would reccomend taking it at nite before going to bed it worked out for me!! its ok to be nervous but clomid does work! GOOD LUCK.
