Metformin - Does It Help?

Okay, my RE finally put me on Metformin.  I'm a little perturbed because I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 21 (now 30) and no one ever mentioned this drug to me???  Anyway, I'm praying it will help my situation, some.

Please let me know your experience with this drug.  Has it helped you.  It has been shown to help with micarriages in women with PCOS.  Any success stories?

I am on metformin (sustained release) 500mg x 3 times a day for the last 8 months...Iam not overweight, but i have sudden change in my periods last year they became infrequent, also hve unwanted hair growing at every unwanted place, and had pimples too..Only good thing happened to me after metformin was my insulin level reduced frm 224 to 100, 3 months back, and my pimples have all gone....

Iam also on clomid , but metformin alone is not inducing ovulation in me still....

side-effects that I had was increased diarohea (it was too much!! )but now iam a veteran in metformin therapy so my abdomen is frends with it...

I have been on metformin since November.  I got pregnant the second month of taking it.  But that ended in a miscarriage in february.  It's hard to tell if the metformin is doing anything for me because I have not actually gone through that many full cycles since starting it.  I started in the middle of a 34 day cycle, the next cycle would have been 44 days but I got pregnant. (my cycles usually range from 33-54 days so no change there)  Since the m/c it "only" took 42 days to get AF (last m/c not on metformin it took 54 days).  My RE seems to really like metformin and therefore must have good results with it.  I think next month I will start clomid or femara though because I don't want to waste much more time (I am 37y).  Overall I am happy with the drug I just don't know what it is really doing for me yet.

I'm surprised more people didn't respond to your question....there ARE success stories with Metformin.  I've read a few just recently.  You can do a search here and find some more info on it.

If Metformin doesn't help, your next step is probably to try Clomid (in conjunction w/ the Metformin).    Best Wishes!

Yeah, my sister lost 20 pounds already???  I am not overweight at all, but I do have the extra hair growth and infrequent periods which the metformin is supposed to help with.  Has your cycle been regulated with the drug?

honestly i hate taking pills but i started to take only one a day and now i'm taking 3x day.  Metformin i feel it has helped me i also was diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago. I'm 28 yrs old and TTC as well thank God have not had any miscarage. I use to weigh 140 lbs and went up about 40lbs. The metformin helps alot in regulating ur system and it has help me control my weight i have lost 10lbs already and doctor said today that my linning in my uterus is good might become pregnant this month. So I am in a position that i will do anything possible to become pregnant and see my little one. Just pray a lot because i get fustrated and depressed. Wish u all the luck and God bless!!
