Need advice on having a tubal?

Ok, I'm new to this idea of tubals so I thought maybe some of you could help me with some information and advice. I am 22 yrs old and happily married to a wonderful husband and father to our 4 yr old son. We are now expecting our second in the second of April 2011. I was on the pill for right at 2 years and it failed me, but we are extremely happy about our new daughter/son that is on the way. My husband and I have been together for about 7 yrs now and have always just wanted 2 kids, which I think is a good number. We have been in the talking of him getting a vasectomy but although Im thinking of getting a tubal instead so if we decide in 10-12 yrs to have another we can hopefully get them untied. It probably won't be that way but I just don't want to make a decision that I might regret later if things don't go right with a reversal. So I'm sure that alot of you women are older than me and have more knowledge on these things, so I was hoping that you could all give me some helpful advice on what would probably be best..Just to let you jnow a little more about me, I love being a mother and I absolutely love children. my major is nursing and I want to go into being even a midwife or a  nurse in the NICU. i think as long as I have 2 healthy happy children that is my dream and wouldnt really bother me to not be able to have anymore but I'm sure alot of people say that so I just don't want to make a choice that might not be for me still being as young as I am. Hi, Just wanted to give you a little advice. I am 24 years old. I wanted to get my tubes tied after I had my son thinking I didn't want anymore kids cause I have 2 stepsons from my husband. My gyno advise me that if I were to do that the chances of me having a reverse wasn't that great. I thought about it. And close to the time of my appointment to have it done I changed my mind. Now a couple months ago I have found out that I can't have anymore kids unless I take fertility drugs. I'm lucky I didn't get the tubes tied but not so lucky finding out that I may not be able to have anymore children. At the time I wanted to get it done I was only 22 years old. Now my husband and I decided to start trying for another child last year in August/September. We haven't had any luck. So just be careful about what you choose. There are so many different options to go with. One of my closest friends had her tubes tied at the age of 21 and now she's 28 and went and had it reversed and the outcome wasn't pretty. She found out a couple months ago that when they reversed it, it had caused her tubes so much scaring that she can only be able to have another child by IUI, etc. My prayers are with you!

Hi, I know I shouldn't tell u this but...DON't DO IT!    There are so many other ways out there.....this is a sentence...I have 3 beautiful children, 15 years ago I had my tubes tied...I am remarried for 7 years, my dh has no children...I  am now 44 and had my tubes untied 6 weeks ago...prior to that did ivf..bfn and then fet...bfn...this was my only option...you just never know what could happen...and we can't say the words...all I know is I wished all of you were there for me back then...please forgive me...I can only speak from my heart and experience.....research!

Hi I had a tubal done at 21 worst mistake ever. I am 42 now just had a TR in 2009 and we have been trying to conceive for a year. I use to be very fertile back then.
So my opinion is to get an IUD or go back to the pills and make sure you take them every day and if you have to take antibodies  make sure hubby wear a raincoat cause antibodies meds over power birth control pills.

if there is any doubt at all in your mind go for a less permanent option.

And you need to wait until at least a few years after you give birth to your second to be supersure if you do go for a permanent option.

We see so many women here who've had permanent solutions here and regretted it.  Reversing a tubal is not always successful.  IVF has it's own costs, difficulties and potential complications.

I agree that IUD would be the best form of birth control for the next few years at least until you can really be super sure.

Thanks to both of you for being honest and yes it's a very big decision and of course very permanent so I will have to sleep on it for a while..I have thought about the idea of an IUD, i just can't grasp if I want it because I am the kind of person who wanted kids but not alot. I think 2 kids are easier than 3 and 4, mentally and financially. I look up to moms that have more and don't lose their mind. I am only right at 15 weeks so I still have plenty of time to think about it and discuss it with my husband and of course my mom because I go to her for advice all the time. Thanks again!

I would actually look into getting and IUD there are 2 different ones on the market right they are a great form of birth control you don't have to remember to take a pill everyday and they can be removed at anytime before they are due to be removed if you want to become pregnant sooner

Mirena IUD- Is a hormone based IUD and will last 5 years it kinda works like taking pills it releases hormones into your body to keep you from becoming pregnant and again can be removed anytime you decided you have another child

Paraguard IUD- Is a copper IUD that does not contain any hormones at all and will last for 10 years at keeping you from getting pregnant. The way that it works is that it creates a hostile environment in your uterus to keep you from getting pregnant. The Uterus must be kinda in a certain balance if you will to contain a pregnancy this IUD messes that up, itls a little hard to explain how that works but again if 7 years down the rd you decide it is time for another child you can have it removed and get pregnant

It only takes like 2 minutes to have these removed in the dr office, they are also placed in the dr's office which takes 5-10 minutes so no surgery, no recov. time and best of all NOT PERMANENT  hope this helps

i would discuss a less permanent option.
reversing a tubal is not always successful and many need to pursue IVF to have additional children.
both the procedure and the reversal involve surgery and not something to be undertaken likely.
with so many options out there from mirena to condoms, i'm sure you can find something that works for you and your lifestyle but will allow you to not have to make a permanent decision at such a young age.
