Ovulation

My husband and I have been TTC for 1.5 years. I do not have regular periods at all (sometimes I might get it once a month, but normally it's a period every three to four months) - so it is assumed that I do not ovulate? or do very rarely? or it is just really hard to tell when / if I actually do ovulate. My doctors know about the irregular periods since they always ask for "date of last menstrual period" with every checkup regardless of the reason, and never seem concerned that they are this irregular. I have tried monitoring cervical mucus and we seem to be timing sex correctly for when mucus would indicate pre-ovulation and ovulation - so I guess my question is, will this eventually work or should we be doing more? (I live in a big city where it's impossible to get an OBGYN appointment within a reasonable amount of time  - so I have to wait another month just to get in with a nurse practitioner - so I'd love some answers / tips now)- thanks!

So, some ovulation occurred at some point, because I went for my exam yesterday and explained all my concerns with being irregular and TTC, the doctors listened, then filled out all sorts of paperwork to refer me to an RE and start doing some bloodwork, but basically warned me before any of the bloodwork that I most likely had PCOS. They prescribed me progesterone to induce a period and then did a urine test just to double check for pregnancy before they sent in the prescription - and it came back positive! I don't know who was more shocked, me or the doctors/nurses. So they took blood to confirm pregnancy, said congratulations and sent me home. Now I do not know what to think and am waiting for the blood test to come back - will this be high risk? I am so worried it could be ectopic, or has low chances of survival because I haven't had a period since May, and I tested negative on July 27, then positive on August 5 - so I have no idea how far along I am or whether or not to be hopeful....any insight?

Sorry to hear about your dilemma, it's frustrating!
Have you tried over the counter ovulation kit? I would go and purchase this and start to try to track your ovulation. In the meantime start keeping track of your cycles - mark them on the calendar each month and keep notes of the amt of days in between. Set up an appt with a Gyno and bring all this info with you so that they can get a good baseline to try and determine the problem.
They may put you on Metformin (to help ovulate) or Clomid. Prior that they will probably do an ultrasound and other tests to be sure of your problem.
Best of luck to you and make that appt!

I too had problems with my period, I was having them every three months. When my husband and I started trying, I decided to go to a fertility specialist and they gave me meds that made me ovulate every month and I'm now 7 weeks preggo (i hag an iui also). So maybe you can get an appt with one and they may be able to help...Good luck!!
