Hey there,

I just wanted to let you know i had an HSG done September 25th, 2009 and it wasn't as bad as other women said it would be. Then again I guess everyone handles pain differently. I think the most uncomfortable part abt the test is when they are entering the catheter into your uterus. It's a slight burning shooting pain and then they start running the dye through which causes a cramp like feeling almost like you have your period and feel wet down there with cramps. Also they are going to tell you to keep still while they take x-rays of your belly. They are going to ask you to lower your legs which will be a bit difficult because you have the clamp holding your vagina walls open then the catheter in your uterus so it's a bit uncomfortable. Once that's uver they remove everything and all the pain will go away just make sure to have a sanitary napkin with you because the dye will come out along with some blood...not too much just streaks....Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Can you let me know how the test went.  I'm suppose to go next month.  They were trying to schedule me for tomorrow but they can't get the room at the hospital so now it has to be done next month.

We've been ttc for 1 year now I'm 33 and dh is 38 and we haven't had any luck. DH s/a was fine and all my other blood work was fine such as thyroid & FSH.  I've always been  regular between 28 and 31 cycle.  I use the opk's and get LH surge anywhere between cycle day 14 to 17 so i asked the doctor if he actually thought there was a chance that the tubes were blocked and he said probably not but that it's a process of elimination.  On cylce day 22 i'm for more blood work, progestorone, LH, ect.

Hope your test went well, please keep me posted.

My doctor said the HSG would be done to see the condition of the uterus. Are there any scar tissue? Septum? Or possibly a misshapen uterus.  He agreed that my tubes are clear and open since I am able to become pregnant, so therefore wants to check out the uterus for some answers.

I just had the HSG on Wednesday, it was not as bad as I had imagined.  I did not take any pain relievers before and didn't need them after.  The doctor (my obgyn) prescribed antibiotics though to prevent infection, I took them for 3 days prior to the test and I seem fine.  Its better to be safe then sorry, I also heard the antibiotics help with scarring but who knows how true that is.

The test itself was more embarrassing then painful. The hospital I had it at didn't have stirrups and I had to just keep my legs in the position like a frog (with only my "area" exposed, my legs and stuff were covered with blankets) im very shy and I know that all goes away once you have a kid but umm that's what im working towards so this was extremely humiliating to me.

So this is why it may be a good idea to take xanax or valium or whatever it is to calm you down!

When the doctor was doing the test I felt a lot of pressure down below (only for about 15 seconds), I sortof was pulling away from him but to me its mind over matter and knowing this test is important for my fertility I dealt with it.  I think everyone handles pain differently, so it may be a good idea to take something just in case.

During the test I was able to view the monitor (just like having an ultrasound) and I could see the dye filling my fallopian tubes, it was emotional for me because I was scared of the outcome.  Finally when the doctor said "You are ok, the tubes are open" I burst into tears!!! They thought I was in pain, but I was just happy!!!

I had very light bleeding afterwards only a few hours worth so that was good.  Be sure to wear a pad afterwards because the dye leaks out for several hours, oh and I had to pee every 15 minutes afterwards.

Well, good luck!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope my lil essay helped, lol.

I have an apt. tomorrow, I am going to ask why do this? I've become pregnant twice so I agree with you, my tubes should be okay? But but maybe something is wrong with my uterus? And that is why there is no keeping it?

I had one done about 6 years ago, and I did get pregnant a few months later after almost 2 years of TTC.  I felt that it definitely was painful, but glad I did it.  I had 70% blockage on one side...so good thing.  If you have any left over narcotics from the dentist (percocet or tylenol 3)or something, I would CERTAINLY take that, otherwise I personally would take Motrin or Advil.  Don't waste your time with extra strenght Tylenol.  Good luck!

Well, I'm not sure why they are doing this test??  You didn't have an ectopic??  Obviously your tubes are fine if you keep getting preganant (eggs fall from the tubes)??  Please ask why they want to do this test??  They did mine before they started any meds.  So that's why I'm confused??

Your tubes are probably fine...the HSG also looks for abnormalities in your uterus.  They shoot the dye through your cervix w/a very thin catheter and it goes through your uterus and up through your tubes.  Generally it's for checking the patency of your tubes, but it also checks for uterus abnormalities like polyp or misshape.  Take advil prior to procedure.  They do the procedure relatively quickly.  They should check you out for chomosomol problems though. It is my understanding that they do that if you've had more than one m/c.  Perhaps you have progesterone problem, or anticardiolipid antibodies, or something hormonal.  Good luck.

well first tomorrow I have to go for "a lot of bloodwork" I asked what are some of the things they are checking and she said, lupas? anti-bodies? thyroid?  Maybe they will find something there and I won't have to go through with the HSG?

Hi,
I didn't mean to scare you about the HSG test, but I also wanted to prepare you.  My personal feelings were that it was very painful (maybe I'm a wimp).

To answer your question, NO, I had never been pregnant before the HSG test...we had been trying for almost 2 years, including fertility treatments such as clomid and progesterone.  I never got pregnant on any fertility treatments.

To date, I am currently beginning my 4th pregnancy.  My miscarriage was 4 months ago in Sept. 2006 at 7 weeks. Prior to that, I had 2 children that are 17 months apart...the oldest just turned 5.

I'm not clear why your dr. is suggesting an HSG, as you seem to not have much of a problem conceiving.  This is your second pregnancy, and unfortunately, miscarriage.  My understanding for the test is to clear the fallopian tubes of mucus to allow sperm to travel without obstacles in the tubes.

Anyway, sorry I rambled, if you have any more questions...feel free to ask!  Again, I am very sorry for your loss...((hugs))

Hello. I had HSG done about 2 years ago. It was not very painful just uncomfortable.. It is done in the X-Ray room. They inject dye andt look on the screen to see if your tubes are open.  Good luck. Take some volium to calm you down.

yes - it wasn't so bad. I felt a burning sensation for maybe 10 seconds and some pressure but that was it. No pain afterwards.  They usually recommend advil etc a few hours before. Ask your doctor. Good luck!
