Your right...a lot of $$$...and hard for my dh...he is such a penny pincher, and he, too, likes to save and pay for things when purchasing. You are young (i am 10 yrs older than you!)  and so time wasn't on our side...and didn't want to end up saying "what if...wish we would...we should have done more..." so we sucked it up, did the IUI's & IVF's and used my year of teaching to pay off the baby we had that year and I was able to stay home the next year to be w/ him. Now I am working p/t again to pay off the treatments we are going through again...and then we are done.
Good luck to you...you will get it all figured out however it works the best for you. It seems like on top of the fertility stress...adding the money stress certainly is a challenge!

wow that is so much money!! i could only dream about that kind of money HD probably makes that much in one year!!  i think if u can u should get car payments and all that outta the way if possible less to have to worry about. i ve been lucky HD's family knows how to buy stuff right and not spend years buying it so i dont have to worry bout mortgage or car payment but i do have to fix my car cus its broken and i have to get my house remodeled to move in at the same time. I think thats really good advice for ur sis cus u never know i havent been able to get prego and my sis cant either i mean she has but she m/c's twice  they have told her the baby doesnt attach and that her levels werent high enough.

Our insurance didn't cover fertility treatments, but our clinic was good at billing our insurance for anything that could be something for "female" problems...ie...u/s, b/d, and some meds. After all was said and done, 3 IUI's and 3 IVF's plus meds, plus a donor "fee" we spent about 25K. Our clinic also gave a 5% discount if our cycles were PIF, so we used what we had in savings and then used a 0% credit card that we paid off in one year. My hubby wanted to save up for the procedures...but when you hit the ripe ol' age of 34 (tee..hee) not much time to save...I told him that we made monthly payments for a car...and a baby was much more important to me. Anyway...this is what we did. I have also told my younger sister that she should start saving for possibly fertility treatments (seems crazy!) but we save for cars, down payments, etc...and don't think we would ever need to pay for fertility treatments...then if she doesn't need to (hopefully!!) she can spend the $$ on a beautiful nursery or hey...college fund!
Good luck with all of this...a lot to take in!

Unfortunately for me i don't have kind of insurance for infertility, i have paid everything out of my pocket, medications and visits to my Re.Lat year i paid almost $ 12.000 on treatments and medications and i didn't even do ivf or iui.Try to find any insurance cause it is very hard to pay everything out of your pocket.

I'm not exactly sure how it works in the States (I'm cdn but my father and some family are American) but I have one cousin who had insurance problems when she got pregnant.  She got pregnant the month she bought insurance (lucky girl! her first month trying!) and her insurance company wouldn't cover anything for 8 months.  Many insurance companies will give individuals a hard time about 'pre-existing conditions'.  I'm not too sure but if you're trying, you might want to look into that.
goodluck.

I think there are people on both ends and all in between.  Some pay totally out of pocket, other have insurance that pays for everything and others have insurance that pays for part of the treatments.

For me, my insurance pays for the dr visits, evaluations, tests, medication, infertiltiy treatment (not including assisted reproduction methods like IUI or IVF) and ultra sounds.  Usaully before you can do IUI or IVF they are going to want to assess your fertilty status. Without insurance, this in itself could get costly. Once they have determined your fertility status you then move onto treatment. This could include surgery, medication, IUI or IVF.

Where I go, a large part of the cost of the IUI is the dr visits and ultrasounds.  Luckily my insurance paid for that, so all I had to pay out of pocket was the cost of the IUI and sperm wash which came to $300.  I did it three times, so I paid $900... not including copays for all the dr visits and medicaitons.

Really you should have insurance before you get pg tho.  You want good consistent prenatal care, and I don't know how you would do that without insurance.  Also, your new baby would not be insured either.
