metformin

Hello,

I am going to ask my doctor about metformin with I see him on Wed for a Clomid check and to get more Clomid.

I have PCOS

I was wondering if Metformin has helped anyone lose some weight?  It is very hard to lose weight, and being on provera and clomid the last 2 months I have gained some!  its driving me crazy, I carry all my weight in the middle too!

I have done the adkins diet and it did work great for me but I have not been able to lose weight trying it again!

Thanks for any info!
Lynn

I have been on metformin for almost a yr and up until a month ago I didnt loose anyweight but all of a sudden I lost 5 pounds. I dont know that this was due to the metformin but I dont think I was eating that different. Dont rely on it to help you that way. It can take a long time to work the way you want it to. But it can only help you while trying to get pregnant. I am surprissed they dont have you on it already. My dr made sure I was on it before putting me on clomid since clomid can creat large cysts and metformin can help prevent that. Good luck I hope you get put on it. I am taking 1500mg.

I would start Metformin today if you have it. I had bad experience with Clomid 2 times out of 7 months that I used it. Its been about 6 months since I have been on Clomid. I did gain some weight, and wow my emotions were all over the place. I was on 100mg when I was emotionaly crazy, and when I moved up to 150mg, I wasn't that bad. Femara, I didn't have anything bad side effects at all. They say that once you have taken Metformin for a couple of months, that the greater the chances go for Clomid to work. That is just what a doc has told me.

I have to do a HPT today or tomorrow to make sure its neg so I can start another round on Provera.

Should I start taking the Metformin right away or wait till tomorrow (only taking it 1 time a day to start)

if you were have a bad experience with Clomid, take the femara ( i have no side effects to clomid.....well at least not with the 50mg)

Good Luck Lynn!
I hope that the Metformin and Clomid will work for you. I just started Provera last night, And well I haven't been myself lastly, (lower abdom pain, back aches, tension headachs, and tossing all the food up) sorry TMI, but we'll see what happens. I have a script for Clomid 150mg and Fermara. Whatever one I would like, so I am debating on which medication I will try. I have been on Metformin since May 2010.  I did bloodwork in September and my A1C levels were pretty good. But AF hasn't come on her own ever since June, and I haven't had after since Aug. Did a HPT came out NEG, but this is the longest that AF hasn't come.

Thanks ladies,

I went to the doc this morning, He up-ed my mg of clomid to 100mg.

He did think Metformin would be benificial for me. he gave me 1000mg but said to take 500mg to start for  1-2 weeks and then take it 2 times a day.

I am excited about it possibly helping me.  I gained 2 lbs in a month!

My dad is diabetic and has been on metformin before, he said he had diarrhea but it was OK after a couple weeks.  I have tummy aches and diarrhea all the time so that wouldn't be a new thing for me! LOL  (its because i had my gall bladder removed in '03)

Thanks for all the info and I will keep my Weight tracker up to date so if you want you can check it and see if it helps me!

Ya the metformin can be alittle hard for some to get used to at first. But once your body adjusts to it everything will be fine again. I learned not to let myself get to hungry while getting used to it to help with the nuasea feelings. And when I first started I had to keep myself busy or else I would feel sick. But its only like that for no more than two weeks and its all worth it. Good luck

I to have PCOS, and started Metformin in May 2010. I started with 1000 mg daily, to 1500mg daily. I am TTC, but nothing yet. I know that Metformin isn't suppose to bring on your AF (Provera is suppose to do that), but I have heard wonderful and horriable things about Metformin. As for me, I have lost 50 + lbs. For a while (5 months) I was in th gym 4-5 times a week, but I started school and somewhat got lazy with going to the gym. Metformin has helped with my weight loss. I  used to take metformin when I was 16 (now 24) but stopped after a couple of months because my stomach wasn't able to handel it. But no problems as of right now. Good luck!

For us with PCOS gain weight becouse our bodys respond to foods different. Excercise will help but not unless you eat the right foods for your body. And the correct portion size. You may notice you dont eat much more than all your friends but it affects your body and not theres. If you just changed what you eat even without excercise you will see a big difference. I learned alot about how to eat and what to eat from weight watchers. I didnt stay with it for that long but I learned so much and started loosing weight the first week. And when you think you learned enough just quit and do it on your own if you want. It amazing. I still have the books that I was giving that tell me about each food. and I can still loose weight. I hope this helps and good luck!

I have been on metformin for about a year and I have definitely lost weight from it .. I have to work really hard to lose weight anyway but it does help with the metformin.  I still work out and eat right but I would do that without metformin and loose no weight.  When I am on metformin I have lost some weight. Its not going to just fall off though.

Hey,

Thanks for the info.  I know it will help me, maybe not lose weight but in other ways. I never brought it up to my doc. But he is very open so I hope he will be willing to put me on it!

Did you have to gradually increase your MG to get to 1500mg.  one pill or do you take it 2-3 times a day?

Thanks again
