Midcycle Ultrasound

Hello,
My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 9 months now.  I have been having very irregular cycles.  I had a midcycle ultrasound on day 12 a few days ago.  My doctor said that based on what she saw, I would not be ovulating this month.  My question is, is it still possible that I'll ovulate this cycle and that perhaps it's an extra long cycle and the ultrasound just isn't showing it yet?  In other words, perhaps if I had had the ultrasound done on day 18 or 20, would it be possible that by waiting that long it would then show that I could ovulate?  Or would a day 12 ultrasound be able to show that I'd ovulate, regardless of whether it would be a long cycle or not?

HI!
IF you were my patient, I would really strongly consider starting you on some medication so that you would ovulate more consistently.  Your question is a good one--it may simply be that you are NOT mid-cycle.  IT is really impossible to know where you are in your cycle unless your cycle is regular.
Ask your doctor about Clomid or Femara that helps some women ovulate more consistently.
Good luck!

Thank you Dr. Brown!  So I guess that's kind of my question: since it's possible that it's NOT really the middle of my cycle right now, is it possible that the ultrasound is just too early?  So let's say I am not going to ovulate until day 20, for example; would a day 12 ultrasound be too early to determine if I'll ovulate, or should a day 12 ultrasound still be able to determine if I'll ovulate, even if it's not for a another week or two?

I've been researching clomid and femara quite a bit.  I am REALLY nervous to take anything because of all the things I've read about clomid being related to autism and defects.  What are your thoughts on that?  I've read that femara goes out of your system WAY faster than clomid (thereby making it safer regarding autism/birth defects), but it's not FDA-approved and is way newer, which makes me nervous.  Any insight on that?  I really appreciate your help - I have a new question every 5 minutes about all this stuff!
