Pregnyl during pregnancy - is it safe?
Dear MedHelp,
My wife is 7 weeks pregnany and has been prescribed Pregnyl injections (every 3 days) by her doctor. I cannot find any information that supports this treatment - is this safe?
Background as follows:
Age: 41
Pregnancy history: 1 child via natural conception 6 years ago
Current pregnancy: IVF treatment; 3 blastocysts transfer completed 5 june
Current treatment:
- Progesterone daily (2 ampulees);
- Oxyprogesterone (2 ampules every 3rd day --> from 19 May - 28 June);
- Pregnyl (1 ampule, 1500, every third day from 29 June - )
If any additional information is needed, please advise.

Hi!
Pregnyl is Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin. There is no reason that this should be harmful, as it is a natural pregnancy hormone. HCG is used to support the pregnancy until the placenta(s) develop. I suspect that your doctor will stop the injections around week 12 of the pregnancy, at the same time the progesterone injections are stopped.
These hormones are helpful and natural--no reason for concern.
