Seman Analysis

My husband recently went and had a semen analysis done.  The results were mailed to him with a note to call the doctor to discuss.  So, I looked at the results and interpreted them myself (and I am not an MD) and his sperm count was normal, but the sperm morphology was quite low.  Of course, I freaked out because we are now trying to conceive.  When my husband went to a follow-up appointment, the doctor told my husband that his wife (me!) shouldn't worry and that we will have no troubles conceiving.  However, when I googled sperm morphology, it seemed like this can be a bad thing.

Could you elaborate?

Without the actual numbers, I cannot comment. Morphology less than 4% by rigid criteria or less than 30% by WHO criteria would mean there might be a problem fertilizing your eggs.

I am waiting on my pregnanacy test for this friday (say a prayer)... he also went under a surgery called varicolcele (spelling)..b4 the ivf.. i don't think it helped to much but it was worth it becasue "u never know".. hope this help, I'm willing to ans any more ? you might have.. good luck!!!

What is considered low for the morphology count depend on the type of test done. If the test was a WHO (World Health Organization), then there should be about 30% normally shaped sperm. However, if the test is a Kruger analysis, which is more detailed and time-consuming, then the range needs to be about 14% normal, with at least 4%. So, if his number was 10%, for example, then that would be on the lower end of normal for a Kruger test, but would (incorrectly) seem too low if he had a WHO analysis done.

Why dont you speak directly to your nurse contact at the doctors office.  If you are going to an infertility clinic they will tell you that you have a nurse who you can contact with questions.  I usually ask the nurse questions if I dont understand what it means.  I also tell her I am sorry incase I am asking too many quetions. The nurse will be able to explain.

Good luck

Thanks so much for your response!  My husband said that's what the doctor told him, but well, I wasn't in the doctor's office, so I wasn't exactly sure.  Hee hee. :-D

Hello... not sure if I can help too much but when my DH went in for his analysis he also had low sperm morphology.  My RE says that the low number is actually common in men so it's not a problem and you still can concieve with low morphology... we still haven't concieved but I also have a blocked fallopian tube so  we have 2 obstacles!  Good luck!
