surgery and infertility

Okay, I am a 25 year old mother of 2. In 2005 I was diagnosed with FAP and had already developed colon cancer. I had several surgeries and also had an IUD placed. I had the IUD removed in October of 2006 and my husband and I have not been able to conceive in the last 14 months. Could it have something to do with the surgeries or the IUD? Ihave also done 3 cycles of clomid and am fixing to do 3 more cycles. What should I do and where should I go from here? Thank you for any advice you are able to give.

After 2 years of ttc with no success and all regular tests showing that there is nothing wrong with either me or my dh I had a laparoscopy.  Turns out an old surgery that was done almost 20 years ago when I was a teen produced scar tissue (that grows around surgical scars) on both sides and covering both ovaries.  As a result, the eggs that were released were prevented from going into my falopian tubes for fertilization.  Just like you I did several cycles of clomid prior to the surgery but those were definitely a waste of time and money.  You should seriously talk to your doctor before taking more clomid.
Good luck!

Dear wenny15 - yes it is possible the surgeries have affected your anatomy. That being said, the best thing to do when you have been trying for over a year is to have a full infertility evaluation by an infertility specialist. Typical tests will include:

1) an X-Ray test call a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) where we inject a dye into the uterus that allows us to see the uterus and the fallopian tubes on an X-ray to see if the tubes are open or blocked.

2) a sperm count
3) blood tests on you to test for hormonal reasons for not getting pregnant

Having already tried clomid for three cycles, I would strongly recommend that you see an infertility specialist and have this testing done. I don't think another three months of clomid is worth your while, unless you do not have periods unless you take clomid. If your periods are regular even when not on clomid three more months is not likely to be beneficial.

Good luck!
