Thyriod testing requested from RSP

I have been trying 3years to get pregnant and am now seeing a RSP.  He did the big long lists of blood tests. My first IUI didn't take and has asked for more test for my thyroid,  Thyroxine T4total, T3 Update, TSH 3rd Generation, T4 Free and thryroid antibody.  In January my TSH was 5.02 or 5.2.  A dr. about 6years ago thought I was having a thyroid problem, but since then every dr. tells me my wt. problem and depression are just hereditary.  Why would my dr. ask for these tests? How does the thyriod affect pregnancy?  I asked the nurse but she said she doen't know the information.  I would appreciate any information you could share.  Thank you

Thank you for responding to my questions.  Is there medication that can help regulate this hormone to help with fertility?

tizzyliz,
your doctor is seeking evidence of sub clinical hypothyroidism. this condition is characterized by borderline elevated or high normal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, suggesting your body is working overtime to maintain normal thyroid hormone levels.  if the borderline TSH levels are associated with antibodies against the thyroid (anti thyroid peroxidase antibodies)you might be intermittently slipping into a state of low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) between blood tests.  and since virtually every cell, including the embryo's cells during early gestation, depend on the woman's thyroid hormone to function normal, even subclinical hypothyroidism can cause miscarriage or infertility. david
