IVF and # of eggs fertilized?

IVF recipients: How many eggs did you fertilize (particularly using ICSI) and how many of those actually became viable embryos?

I'm dropping in. We didn't do icsi. ivf#1 failed, ivf#2 - bfp. I wasn't expecting it to work 'cause 8 of 10 eggs died before day 5. Transferred the remaining 2 grade b&b+ day 5. 1 implanted and 1 vanished. Everyone's story is different, surely. Wishing babydust to all lovelies here.

Hello I just had 2nd IVF. 6 were retrieved. 5 were mature. 4 fertilized. Any feedback on chances of a viable egg?

We are in same boat right now. We also don't want to make any embryo that we will not use.

I would agree. I had 17 eggs retrieved since my original post. That is higher than my antral follicle count as well.

Just for everyone's info, the answer to my dilemma was to find a shared rusk program that allowed the patient some control over the # to fertilize. After speaking with our new doc (who was much more helpful) we decided on 10. 9 fertilized normally.  We got one beautiful blast on day 5 and are still waiting to hear the fate of the others that looked like they might become blasts by day 6 or 7. I'm still waiting to hear details about the others. I was told by the doc who did my transfer that unless the embryo becomes a blast before freezing, it doesn't have the potential to become a baby. Anyone else hear that?

Just a note about "antral follicles".  

I had 6 antrals (3 per ovary).  I have diminished ovarian reserve.  FSH: 10.2 AMH: 0.86  

I had 19 eggs retrieved.  13 mature and 9 fertilized, no icsi needed.  So it is possible to get more.  I am not saying that is the norm, but to use the word NEVER...that isn't correct.

On my first ivf cycle, 5 eggs retrieved, 4 fertilized and only 2 made it to day 3.  Transfered both, BFP but miscarried at 7wks.  

This time around RE wants to do a more aggressive aproach to try and get me to produce more eggs.  I personaly would fertilize all of them, becuase you never know which ones will keep developing, especially since you guys are paying out of pocket for it.  If you have say 10 left over that make it to day5, that doesn't mean that all 10 will survive the thaw and produce a successfull pregancy.  My RE also told me that if I plan on having more than 1 one child that it is better to have some 33 year old eggs to put back into a 35 year old me than to do another fresh cycle at 35 when I may not produce the best quality eggs.  Plus the price to freeze them is way cheaper than the price of a fresh cycle.

Another question I would ask your RE is what your antrol follicile count is.  This is the amount of eggs you will get approxiametly.  If for example the # is 12. You won't get more then 12 eggs EVER.  I would suggest since you are paying out of pocket to fertalize them all.  Good Luck

My RE gave us the following statistics and I was wondering how they applied to everyone. He said of all eggs fertilized with ICSI, 75% likely will fertilize and of those that become embryos, 50% will make it to day 5. Has anyone found this to be accurate in their case?

1st ICSI cycle:

28 eggs collected, 17 fertilised all frozen on day 1 due to OHSS.

1st FET thawed 6 embies, only 2 were good quality on day 2  -  BFN
2nd FET thawed 6 embies, again only 2 were good quality on day 2  -  BFN
Plan to use our 5 remaining embies for final FET in a few months.

So far none of my embies have made it to day 5.

Everyone is different with the percentage that fertilise and the percentage that survive to day 5.

12 retrieved, 6 fertilized w/ ICIS, 2 transferred on day 3, 2 frozen and 2 discarded.

Currently in TWW

13 retrieved- seven fertilized w/ ICIS, 3 transferred on day 3 and one frozen, the other's discarded.

10 eggs retrieved, 9 fertilized with ICSI. 7 made it to day 5. Transferred 2 and froze 5. Now 30 weeks pregnant. Plan on FET next year.

Thank you for sharing and understanding.  I'm sorry your first transfer ended in miscarriage, but happy that you have more embryos to try with.  Hoping your remaining embryos make it through the thaw and that your next transfer is a success.

Hi there,

I had 24 eggs retrieved, and 19 fertilized with ICSI.  1st transfer was 2 blasts and unfortunately miscarried very early.  Out of the 19, transfered 2 and froze 3 blasts, all others were not of a quality that my RE felt could survive a thaw.  So, next month doing a natural FET with however many of those 3 make it through thaw.  

I agree with Tones, since there is are no guarentees, I would (and did) fertilize as many as possible.

So does anyone know the stats? Like what % of eggs that are fertilized actually make it to blast stage? Anyone have any numbers for me?

I had 30 eggs retrieved and 23 fertilized with ICSI. Two were transferred back to me and I'm almost 31 wks with twins :D

Thanks for your thoughts. Believe me, I have played out the "What if" scenarios over and over again in my mind.  It wouldn't be the worse thing in the world to have to freeze one or two, but there are no guarantees that only 1 or 2 would be left.  We could have 3 or 4 or maybe even more depending on how many we'd fertilize.  So, I think by limiting the number we fertilize at any one time, that will guarantee at least that we won't have more embryos than we are willing to use.  Of course, as you point out, the negative is that we might not have any at all and all that money is spent.  My doc did say we could freeze the eggs and use them for a second round if this one didn't take, so that I wouldn't have to undergo extraction again.  I'm just not sure of the expense there.  I understand what you mean about keeping an open mind, and we also thought about embryo adoption....but I'm just not sure how I feel about that. Believe me, sometimes I wish I didn't feel this way as it would greatly increase our chances of pregnancy and save us loads of money (shared risk that is), but I have to trust it will all work out in the end...the way God meant it to.  Anyway, I don't want anyone to feel judged here.  This is an incredibly difficult situation to navigate through and I don't cast blame on anyone.  So, I hope no one is offended by my posts.  Thank you all for your thoughts and I still welcome more.  I'm interested in your experiences and about the chances of fertilization with ICSI.

the thing with freezing some is that it gives you an insurance policy if it doesn't work out .. I had 3 blasts from my last fresh round of IVF ... had one transferred and got BFP but lost it at 12 weeks .. we used a frozen one for our next round . . got BFP again .. but have just lost it at 7 weeks .. there are no guarantees with this business, so always good to have another frozen one there so you don't have to go through the whole fresh process again .. it does put a lot of stress on your body, and a frozen round is much easier!

there is always the option of donating your remaining embryo's to a couple who can't produce their own .. that's what we planned to do if we didn't use all of ours .. keep an open mind and find out all your options.  But I think it is important to fertilise all as you can't see which ones are going to develop and which aren't after extraction .. what if you only chose to fertilise a few but they were the ones that were going to fail?

Congrats! Well, my dilemma is that I do not want to destroy any embryos and I would prefer not to fertilize more than I'd be willing to actually use.  So, right now we are thinking about trying to fertilize 4 with ICSI, but we are paying per treatment (no shared risk program b/c we don't want to fertilize so many eggs), so I'm starting to wonder if it is worth the risk or whether we should gamble on fertilizing more just so that we can end up with at least one blast.  We feel strongly about not destroying or freezing more than we'd ever use.  Just wondering if anyone feels the same way and how they are dealing with it.

we had 8 eggs , but only 3 embies with ICSI., implanted 2 and am almost 38 weeks pregnant with 1 baby girl.
'you don't have to freeze any...you should most definitely fertilize all of them and you can opt to not freeze any if you actualy have any left over (we did not have any left)

Has anyone ever just chosen to fertilize 5 or less eggs in an attempt to avoid having to freeze any??

  It all depends on the round and meds you use i have found..My first round of IvF I had 38 eggs..yes..wow..but got sick and none made it to day 5 blasts, so tried again and had 12 eggs and only 1 made it..but didnt work,  So we changed doctors and used a diff protocal, last time we had 11 eggs and 6 turned into beatiful blasts.... and had a 3 embryo transfer yest...So everybody, and every round is sooo different i have found!  Good luck !!
