my dr decided on 5 day transfer

So, I heard today that five (of nine) eggs fertilized and my dr is planning on a five day transfer.
Realistically, how many of the five will make it to day five (I am 40 y/o)? I know no one can say for sure, but for those of you who did a five-day, how many did you "lose" along the way?
Also, do they wait until the day of transfer to tell you how many made it?
Is it a possibility that they could call that day and say none of them made it?
Thanks

My RE did the same thing as lorane's - he hoped for a 5 day but it was a day by day monitor. I had 12 eggs retrieved. 9 fertilized. 6 made to blast (3 were lagging behind tho and they were day 6 blasts that i had frozen). I had 2 out of the best 3 transferred on day 5. 1 took but unfortunately ended in miscarriage at 8 weeks. I had the fetus tested and it was a chromosome thing - had one extra chromosome. Obviously the ones that looked the best weren't the best - unless the one that didn't take was fine. Anyway - day 5 vs day 3 really depends on your dr's preference. My dr prefers day 5 because you can see which ones are progressing further along. The embies that look great at day 2 might not make it to day 5. you could put the best day 3 embies in only to have them stop growing at day 4 but honestly - it's a crap shoot. My best 2 obviously weren't good. My dr also told me they are finding out the grading system isn't necessarily accurate. Try not to stress and relax- it will help with implantation and good luck!

I also had a five day transfer with 10 fertilizing and 5 making it till day 5 and 2 that were actualy blasts (those two implanted and now having twins:) It is strange though because my RE did not make the initial decision to go 5 day it was a day by day process determined by the ART center embryologist.

Thanks for the info.
My dr originally said he'd put four back (due to my age); I hope 4 make it to Thursday.
They do say if they make it to day 5 there is a better chance of pregnancy, right?

I had 11 eggs retrieved and fertilized, and by transfer on day 5, there were 9 left. Two were transferred, and of the remaining 7, 5 made it to freezing. They should be calling you with updates in the days leading up to your transfer. Some REs check on the embies every day, but my RE preferred to give the embies as much undisturbed time as possible, so they only checked every other day. Best of luck!!!

I had 10 retrieved and 9 fertilized. 8 made it to day 5 and we transferred 2. The day after transfer I got a call that 5 of the remaining 6 made it to freeze. Don't worry about numbers right now. 9 is great to start, but all you need is ONE!
