First time IUI

I had my first IUI done yesterday 10/3/08 and I am really feeling anxious.  I have all these questions going through my head my DH is so excited and I am trying to just calm him down because I dont want us to get our hopes up.  We have been ttc for 1 1/2 now and have been on clomid 50mg for 4 months with unsupervised cycles with my OBGYN.  I finally went to see a RE bc I was unhappy with my OBGYN on cycle day 3 and he did bloodwork and an ultrasound and said everything looked good.   He put me on clomid 100 mg cycle days 5-9 and started estradril thereafter I went back on Thursday for a postcoital and the test confirmed that the clomid was making my cervical mucas thick and no sperm was found.  I was in tears but he reassured me that an IUI with HSG trigger shot on Thursday 10/2/08 would increase our chances of getting pregnant.  He also did an ultrasound and found 3 follicles on the left side and 1 on the right side and said that my bloodwork looked great.  I went yesterday and did the IUI although not painful very uncomfortable.  I am suppose to start progesterone today with the estradril and prenatals.  I am just feeling abdominal tightness and cramping.   Has anyone had success with first time iui.

Hi, I just wanted to share my story with all of you. My husband and I are 31 years old and have been TTC for 18 month approx. My husband has very low sperm count with low motility.  He had 5 million per cc in the first test and 4 months later, after improving his diet and avoiding hot tubs he had 9 millions per cc. Numbers were still low but we decided to give IUI a try last month.

I took Clomid from day 3 to day 7 of my cycle, then had a Repronex injection on day 9 and a HCG injection on day 13.
We had our first IUI on Sept. 15, 2008  but the doctor who performed it was not very optimistic since the sperm count after washing was only 1.4 millions and the dr. said that more than 10 millions is what gives the highest probability but anything between 5 and 10 mill gives good chances too. So you can see we were not in those ranges.
Two days after the IUI I started using progesterone suppositories and started the 2ww....long 2ww but I tried not to be anxious. Every night I would go to bed, relax and think very positively about the whole experience, and never lost faith. During the 2ww I had some cramping, my breasts were a little tender, but everything felt very similar than the days before period would come.

On Sept. 29 I took a home pregnancy test and I could saw a second line but it was soooo faint that I didn't put too much trust on it. On Sept. 30 I tested again and the line was more visible, so I called the clinic and had a blood test. On Wednesday Oct 1 the clinic called me and confirmed that WE WERE PREGNANT!!! We could not believe it!! I am 7 weeks now and still taking progesterone. We had our first ultrasound yesterday and we saw our little baby's heart pumping very strongly! It was an incredible experience and I still cannot believe IUI worked for us in the first try. I am so thankful.

I wanted to share my story because during all the months that I was TTC without success these forums were really helpful for me, giving me a lot of information and also a lot of hope.
My story shows that despite low numbers and low odds it only takes one sperm to do the job :) Be very positive, relax and enjoy the wait and the baby you want will come for sure.

Hope this information is helpful! Good luck!

Funny story:  we did our first iui on Monday (5 days ago) and since we live an hour away and we didn't have much notice (they called us in stat after seeing my lh surge on my bloodwork.)  SO, my dh had to go to the doc's office a couple hours before me... they made him go in this room at the doc's office...  to do his deed...     Afterwards he had me believing the nurse actually ... helped him... if you know what i mean.  LOL

He also swears he got to watch a dirty movie and look at magazines.  But I don't know if i believe him!!!!  He's such a goober!  But I love him to death.   He cracks me up at the most unusual times.  Like for example:  when we went for our first RE visit, i was so nervous that day.  And after they got through doing my vaginal u/s and the nurses walked out of the room, he said  "stick that tube of lube in your purse."   hehehe  (He was kidding of course...)

Thank you Ladies for responding... you know sometimes it is just nice to talk with someone who is going through this.  Thank you agin.

My husband has normal sperm count but he is on the low side of normal according to my OBGYN.   Yesterday when  his post washed sperm count around 8 million, with 51% motility which the nurse said was more than enough.  I was a little upset with him in the morning because he did want help producing the sample and when he gave me his sample it was so little.  I called the office and they said that the volume does matter as much as the potency.  I felt soooo bad that I made him feel bad I am sure that it must be tough to produce a sample on the spot first thing in the morning you know.

I am happy with my new RE and I do feel better monitored and I am hoping that this is it because it is so expensive and my insurance doesnt cover.

Hi! Welcome aboard! IUI can be a good tool, when done correctly which looks like your RE covered the bases, i didn't have success with IUI, but mine were all natural, no meds, no monitoring. I know after the procedure your hopes are through the sky, and this 2 week wait will be the longest of them all! Keep us updated, try to find another group of 2ww'ers on the forum so you find people to relate to everyday! I hope it end with a BFP! GOOD LUCK!!

Hi!
I haven't had success yet with IUI but I wish you luck during your first one. Many women get pregnant the first time. Does your husband always have low sperm counts?
