Rise in temp after ovulation: .4 degrees higher than what??

Hey everyone, I have been searching the internet and my books trying to figure out what this means.

When everyone says post ovulation temps need to be at least .4 degrees higher, what is the higher from? Should it be .4 degrees higher than the day before, or .4 higher than any of my previous temps this cycle?

For example, my highest preovulatory temp was 97.9, but my 5 days before ovulation ranges from 97.0-97.2. Then I had an increase to 97.5 then 97.7 the next day, which is today. Is this high enough to conclude I've ovulated? Or does it need to be higher than 97.9? I'm confused.... Thanks! I'm so annoyed because I haven't gotten a positive OPK, it's much harder to pinpoint this way.

I understand that the .4 degrees higher should be from your baseline temp. Maybe try charting at fertilityfriend.com, it has been helpful to quite a few people I have met and so I started to do this as well.

I actually have been doing two opk's per day, 11ish am and then 7pm. It's very strange, last month was my first month with opk's and I got a positive for two days and didn't get pregnant. THis month, nothing, however my temp has been high for 3 days indicating i o'd, so I really have no idea why it didn't show. My cycle's anywhere from 29-36 days, it really varies when I ovulate, plus I just had a d and c a few months ago, so I really don't know what to expect.

I'm not sure on the BBT question, but have you tried doing 2 OPK tests per day? Getting a positive OPK might be a good alternative indicator of ovulation for you. Apparently some women's LH surge only happens in a very short window of time, therefore testing once a day may mean you're missing the positive OPK window. How long is your cycle?
