Sperm Count

My husband got a semen analysis, the report shows Sperm concentration is 8, normal range is >20, Motility Percent is 13%, normal range is >40%.  How often are poor sperm analysis, then followed by good analysis? Could we have a baby through IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)? How is the success rate to have IUI? Please help us! Thank you!

My husband and I are now going to be doing thr third IUI this cycle. The sperm after washing was around 1 million. We are doing double IUI ( one the day after the other) so we can get 2 days worth of sperm for the cycle. Last IUI was around 2 million in total. The doc seems to think IUI is hopeful as the sperm has less travelling to do. If we try the traditional way the sucess rate is less then 1% with iui the rate moves up to 7-15% but keep in mind couple with no issues every month only have a 20% chance. Good luck with your decisions and I hope i have helped. Hang in there

I just wanted to add that I really have no clue where the cutoff would be as far as sperm count/motility and doing an IUI. I just know that my OB/GYN said that had my husband had a low sperm count then there were things that they could have tried like concentrating it and washing it, etc... We never got that far.... Maybe someone who has some more experience with this or someone who is going through IVF due to male factor infertility would have a lot better information and better advice than myself.

I don't know how often a poor analysis might be possibly followed by a good one, but I do think that given your situation you would be a good candidate for IUI. I'm not a doctor or anything and this is just my opinion. But my husband ( he was an extreme case) he came back with 0 sperm, azoospermia. They performed the test twice to make sure the first wasn't a fluke. Unfortunately, it wasn't. We were told first by my OB/GYN and then by his urologist that had their been some sperm they most likely could have washed it and used it for IUI. So I think that's very much a possiblity for you. We decided in the end to go with a sperm donor and continue on with IUI in this manner. Basically the numbers that I've seen just from doing a lot of searches on all of this and from what my RE has told me is that the success rate for IUI is about the same as trying to conceive naturally. About 20% chance of success per cycle (I believe that's with fertility meds). IUI is given overall though a very high success rate (somewhere around 85% I believe and again that's coming from a lot of searching and from my RE) that's based over the course of six cycle treatments. My RE said that some women are lucky and the first IUI is a success. However he said that's usually not the case and for most women it takes several cycles. I hope I've been of some help. I wish you only the best of luck!!!
