What is the process for invitro?

I just had a miscarriage and now my doctor wants me to go for fertility.  I was wondering if you could please explain the process. I am really worried. Is this very painful and how many eggs is required?

Clearly, all the above has to be answered first but if you do have to do IVF, it's fine.  really.  Briefly, you take fertility medication (normally injections) that force your body to produce more than just one egg.  How many will depend on the dosage of the drug and on your body.  But normally they like to have at least 6 and as many as 20 follicles (in which there may or may not be an egg).  The follicles are retrieved from you under sedation and afterwards the eggs are fertilised with your DH's sperm sample and a few days later (anything from two up to 5 or even 6) the embryos that have survived are transferred into your uterus (takes a few minutes and is painless).  Depending on the country where you live, they might transfer anywhere from 1 to 6 or more but research proves that although going from 1 to 2 or from 2 to 3 can significantly increase your chances... going up to 4, 5, 6 or more will only increase the chance of you ending up with triplets or more.
After the transfer you have to take it easy but this is not an exact science and there are a range of schools of thought... some doctors want you to have total bed rest for 2 weeks.  Others will say none is needed but will tell you not to stand or walk for long periods, no heavy lifting, no strenuous exercise etc...

I am also wondering did he say you should see a fertility specialist or do IVF?  Seeing a fertility specialist does not mean IVF, that is usually a later option after others have failed.

Are you over 35?  That may explain why after one m/c he says see fertility.  After 2 m/c my doc said to see specialist due to my age.

Fertility specialist will first get your history, do some bloodwork, u/s uterus, etc. to see if there is an obvious problem that could have caused your m/c.  Still, after 1, there is often no obvious reason.

I am curious as to why he/she would turn so quick to IVF after only one mc? Did they do any tests on the fetus to see what the cause was? Usually, there are many tests they run b4 resorting to IVF. Was this the 1st mc?  Have they run a day 3 blood work up yet? I'm not saying it's not an option by any means. Just a big step from mc to IVF. One mc doesn't mean that you can't get pg and carry to term. I am really sorry for your loss. It does get better with time. It is a yr and 4 mos since I mc at 12wks and I am still sad off and on. They did testing on the baby and he was perfectly normal. Just an accident from doing too much. It was reassuring in a way to know that there wasn't a genetic problem due to age, but still doesn't change things either. Most of us here know what you are feeling and hope you feel better soon.
