How much metformin do you take?

This stuff makes me sick! I'm on 1000mg per day now, and it took awhile for me to get here. I've lost almost 10lbs, now I weigh 134. My fasting blood sugar is 94,so in normal range. I have recurrent miscarriages. How much met do you think I would need to decrease my chance of miscarriage? I'm freaking out, feeling like I need to up it as I could be pregnant now, but I'm still really sick on 1000. What do you think? How much does everyone else take?

Thanks jennyb473. My FBS was 95, my RE treats with met anything above 90. I will definately push to keep taking it at least through 1st tri if I become pregnant. My biggest problem is horrible nausea with the met, I've had some potty dash issues. I can live with that, but I have to work, and when I'm that nauseated I can't. It sucks.

What I wish I knew is how much met will help me not miscarry. Is 1000 enough for me? Do I need to be at 1500? 2000? I know insulin levels are not very accurate, they change rapidly and can be completely different from one test to the next. I guess I do what I can. I will try and bump to 1500 in a week or so if I feel better. Let me know if it works this cycle for you! I'm 4dpo.

oh one other thing - I believe the stats are that met will reduce chance of mc down to normal ranges even with RPL!

what is your fasting insulin at?  are you taking the met due to PCOS?  if so, your fasting glucose doesn't really tell you anything b/c the PCOS impact is on insulin (which effects glucose) but your glucose can be in the normal range even with your insulin way out.  I have RPL (4 in the last 2 years) and was diagnosed with PCOS based on history and cysts (not that I didn't O - I did that on my own each time I got pg).  My fasting glucose has been borderline for the last 3 or 4 years now (low 100s) and I am overweight.  I thought I was just pre-diabetic - but it turns out I'm Insulin Resistant - my insulin was 31 in June 2006 - it should be under 17 to be in the "normal" range and that is high normal - ideally under 15 would be a good place to be.  I started on Fortamet (easier on the stomach than glucophage - but still takes plenty of getting used to and still bothers me some days) in November 2006 and got up to 1500mg/day.  I got pg in Feb 2007 and stopped the met per RE instruction.  I made it to 8.5 weeks for the first time ever!  I switched REs for a second opinion and my new RE has me at 2000mg/day and I have been working my butt off (literally) at the gym and eating much better since May and have lost 28 pounds since my last pg ended in March and have now gotten my insulin down to 22.  Still higher than the normal range, but my RE says I'm doing everything I can and he is ok with us ttc again!!  Of course, it may not even be the IR causing the mc but I'd like to think it will stick this next time.  Anyway - I am taking 2000mg/day still and will stay on it thru the 1st trimester at least when I do get pg again (tww now!!).  You will get used to the quick dashes to the potty after taking the met and it will subside some after your body gets used to it.  Good luck!!

Thanks! So some people are on a low dose it seems. I'm just nervous, I'm really hoping this is the reason I keep miscarrying and don't want to do that again.

I was on 850 per day, only at night because of the side effects. Took them for about 5 months, lost about 7 lbs.2 of those months I was about 75% eating organic per my acupuncturist. So I think that helped with loss of weight. But the met helped me loose weight, keep sugar level stable, no hotflashes middle or night/day. At 12wks pg OB said to stop.

I was not the same amount... It made me best friends with the toilet... Yeah, ya loss weight, it just isn't pleasant...

Supposedly the "side effect" of metformin is fertility, go figure!
