ovulation/IUI

hi ladies,
does ovulation starts when the egg is released or when the egg is in the tube ready to meet the sperm? I got the surge (on Clomid) saturday morning, but my NP schedule to come in Monday morning for the IUI (I did the booster shot on Saturday night). she explained that it takes about 36 hr for the egg to travel to the tube after it is released and ovulation is a process (36 hr) not a event. I was told that egg can only last ~ 1 day after is released. but if it takes 36 hr to get to the tube it will be dead already. I am very confused and not sure if the IUI is too late for this cycle (I did the IUI this morning). this is my 5th IUI (3rd Clomid) and I am not convinced that the timing is right (I got different story every time). any suggestion/advise is greatly appraciated. Thanks.

thank you so much for your reply. I always got more info from you ladies than from my NPs. for some reason, I felt like I never got straight answers from them and every IUI they told me that everything was perfect but then when we had the next IUI they will say something like "maybe the timing was a bit off last time". today, when my NP did the IUI she said she saw spotting and that is a sign that I have ovulated which is good. but then on the other hand, she always say that IUI should be done prior to ovulation. does it mean that it was too late for this cycle? I have limited sperm supply and it is running out. I did accupuncture/herb and used 2 vials to increase my chance, but if timing is off, then it is wasted again. it is 48 hrs from the time I got the LH surge to IUI (36 hrs from the booster shoot to IUI). is it too late?

The time the egg is released until it meets a sperm or disintegrates is ovulation. You are correct that the time frame is UP TO 24hrs. Most eggs don't make the 24hr mark. I believe what you NP meant is that it is normally approx 36 hrs from the time of the Lh surge to the release of the egg, which is very true. You should be in great shape :)

I think you might have misunderstood her. Ovulation is a process that is triggered naturally by an LH surge or induced with hcg trigger shot.  The process begins with release of the egg. Ovulation (release of the egg) usually begins 36-48 hrs after the hcg trigger shot or natural LH surge. I don't know exactly how long it takes the egg to reach the fallopian tube, but I'm pretty sure it is negligible because the sperm will be there waiting for the egg. Ideally you want to time the IUI as close to when the egg releases as possible.

I've had IUI three times. All three times the IUI was timed 36 hrs after trigger shot.  I got pg the first time, but it didn't work out.  I also got pg the third time and now I am 34wk6d pg.  Twice I had ultrasound about 32-33 hours after the trigger shot and the egg had not yet released but dr said you tell it was just about to because the edges were jagged.

Best of luck to you..
