We have successfully used donor eggs (at 35) w/ a beautiful 23 month old and some frozen blasts. It was a great cycle and the cost additional to that of a regular IVF is paying for more u/s, b/w, and meds...(our clinic had it all in a "package") and then we had to pay the donor (can't actually pay someone for their eggs, but it was like a "donation" fee for her troubles!) and we did get the best of the best meds (since she was administering herself, so wanted a successful outcome! and what was easiest for her!) but since they screen the donors (or at least they should!) very intensely you should be getting someone w/ good eggs, responsible, etc. and you can really match up w/ their profile to what you want. I also have 3 really good friends (who I met through our clinic and now we do "playdates" with our little ones!) who have all been successful w/ donor eggs. Two w/ twins, me and the other with singletons.
Good luck to you!
Hi kitty, I've done much research on this as I'm 46 too. Here's what I know, I hope it helps. As you know all ready I'm sure fertility drops ++ after age 40 with a 1% chance of conceiving per cycle, after age 45, it's even lower. Miscarriage rate for over 45 is 75%, with your own eggs and is directly realted to fragility, poor quality and genetic issues, (80% of eggs over 45 are genetically incomplete, hence the high miscarry rate, mother nature is doing natural deselection). My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 2 years in april. I'm "old" and he has low sperm count. We were not about to go through all the drugs, tests, IVF, expense to find out I could be carrying a down's baby or something worse. Having said all that there are many "miracle" healthy babies born to 45+. Odds are against it, but it can happen< (both my grandmas and my best friend as proof). We have chosen donor, (again), we failed IVF in January, everything was optimal with me, yet I still didn't implant. We're going again in June. This is secondary infertility for me, I have 2 beautiful daughters, 18 and 14, I know this is worth it, and I wish you all the best. Rough cost of raising a child to 18 is $200,000, what's the diff if it's $225,000??? Haha...truly, alll the best, Roz :)
Hi. I'm 14 weeks pregnant after my 1st IVF with donor eggs. I'm almost 45. My Fertility MD monitored everything. He adjusted meds for optimal uterine lining thickness, etc. Nothing was ever mentioned about egg rejection-but they do administer antibiotics and steroids during/after embryo transfer. I will be happy to answer any questions that you have. Good luck.
