Help scared. Dr. wants to put me on Morphine

I recently found out that the percocet I had been taking was no longer working for me, so the doctor wants to put me on a morphine patch.  I went to see my pain specialist and he is in agreement with my dr. , so they want to put me on Kadien.

I guess why I am writing this is because I am scared about the morphine.  I know that I need it but it scares me. Is anyone else on morphine for severe pain and if so how does it make you feel.

Since my previous pain management Dr. moved to another state.  Iv'e had a tough time finding a good replacement.  I live in Kentucky and their laws are making it difficult for doctors and patients alike.  Can anyone tell me of a good pain management Physician in Kentucky. I'm
suffering from buldging disc, Facets desease, Fibro, and MS.  Thanks.

The post above was for Barb, sorry. Some people do get addicted to pain meds but can be functional. I don't consider needed pain meds an addiction if they are necessary. As you say rainwater, no one should suffer needlessly.

I'm of the mind that if I hurt then I'm going to find something to help me be it pain meds or whatever my Doc and I talk about. I am not going to feel condemnation for how I feel, I am doing what I think is right for my body and know my limits, the only thing that conserns me is that you say he thinks you have an addictive personality. How does he know this, how long have you been with him? and has he always treated you like this? I know that paim meds are being frowned upon but pain is pain and when I hurt, I'm going to try to relieve it. If you think you need to see another Doc then do it, he may not be seeing the whole picture., or he just doesn't believe in pain meds. My only concern is what you said and if you have told him this, then he has every reason to think this way. You have to make up your mind weather or not you will become addictied to them, there is no sense in taking a drug that you know that you are going to batttle with... If you have an addictive nature, then I would say stay away from them, but if he is saying this, then I would think twice. He is your Doc and he is supposed to help you and that is with monitering the drugs too. He can prescribe them to you on a weekly basis to see if he is right, but to deny a person b/c he thinks this of you is not right as far as I am concered. No one should suffer needlesly.....

I responded earlier but it didn't show up.  If the Lyrica didn't work, perhaps you should try a higher dose. There are other drugs for nerve pain too. I couldn't handle it if there was nothing.  Go for the morphine if you have to but try to find something other than that for the long term.  It is better to become addicted keeping it in control that to suffer in pain and not be able to function at all.

Thank you for all the info. I have been in severe pain since oct. I think I am being diagnosed with fibro after having every other test known to mankind. I was on Lyrica for 3 mths, but it didn't help. Even pressure point injections haven't helped. I am almost willing to try anything, but my husband says DO NOT take any narcotics. After reading what you have said, I am definitely going to try to avoid them.

I tried fentanyal patches and they helped the pain a lot. Once my flare was over in Aug. I decided to get off the patch. I did it, no sides. I didn't want to live on them forever. Now I am on Lyrica and it works. I use Codiene / Fiorinal for pain for migraines and breakthrough pain from FM. Seems to be in control. You sure don't want to be on a heavy narcotic the rest of your life. They do stop working after while.  I have morphine pills, lots of them. I will take one if it severe enough, but that is rare.  I would try to find a drug that helps nerve pain without all the narcotics. Don't get me wrong, I will take them if needed, but prefer to save them for times it is too unbearable. Luckily that isn't happening with the Lyrica. Dr. just gave me Wellbutrin for pain and energy as the Lyrica can make you tired.  Hope that works.  I prefer killing the pain w/o narcotics.....you may need them in the future and don't want to stay on them for long.  just my 2 cents.

Hi Barb, I am only on 10mg percocet at home.but I have had 2 major spinal surgeries in the past few months and I'm fixin' to have another one on Monday! Anyway to the point ...I have found that in the hospital morphine is what works the best for me! Iwas on very high doses of it and of course it was IV, but still I'm just saying I believe it is the best drug for pain relief,4 me anyway! But I would be very careful, it could be very addcting on a regular basis, that is if that is a concern to u! I was on de lada (spelling?) too, but morphine always gives me the most relief1 Best of luck to ya, i really hope u get some relief from your pain!! Best Wishes,Brandy

Spastic, although I agree that you shouldn't have to live in pain.  I am going to ask you, if you look honestly, do you think using something addictive is safe for you?

If you go over to the addiction forum and read the stories, after a while you realize how painful that illness is too once it's going.  I'm not saying your doctor is right.  They've been known to be wrong before :),  But, I wouldn't want to hear that you got something and then regrettedt it later.  All without a good look at whether he has a point.  You're honest enough with yourself to say that you're tempted to go numb again.  Do you think you'd go there with those kinds of meds?

I wouldn't want that for you any more than what you have now.  I trust you to know yourself, and am just asking the questions.

(FYI, from my observation, it's the people who head on face this that have the most success at finding fixes.  The numbing tends to back fire or keep people at the same level forever.  So that's part of my concern.)  Maybe you can talk to a professional for a bit and see what makes sense.  I hope something works well for you in every direction!!

I have a question, how do you ask your doctor that you need pain medication?  I have begged him, cried hysterically and he still refuses to give me anything.  He tells me I have an addictive personality and doesn't want to put me on anything other than gabapentin and flexeril.  There are days that I want it to be OVER with. How can a doctor refuse you pain medication when you are in dire pain? I do over-medicate, I will take my gabapentin, flexeril and xanax in one dose to just go to sleep for a couple of hours. I have to admit 5 years ago I was smoking pot and I am really tempted again to just go "numb".  What do you suggest? I am going crazy in pain...

I know the feeling I had to detox off of methadone about 3 months ago...It was really bad. Like you the percocet doesn't seem to cut it any more. I tried the Fentanyl patch and couldn't take it so he started me on a morphine based drug called Opana-ER. I'm on week 2 of no pain...it's wonderful. so if you can't take the patch ask him about Opana-ER. The only downfall I get from it is I get "hot", not sweating just hot inside. But I feel so good other than that, I'll live in my house with a tank top and boxer shorts if I feel this good! Good Luck Please let me know how it goes :-)
