SEVERE BREAST PAIN

I was recently diagnosed with FM. Do any of you have severe breast pain associated with FM? I started taking Lyrica this past friday, however the pain started thursday so i do not think that they are related. i called my gyno and they said to take it up with the fibro dr. this irritates me as my mother had breast cancer 2 times-both primary tumors. i have had a hysterectomy, so this is not cyclic etc...

any thoughts or advise??

thanks!
jen~

Hi Texasgirl: I just found this site and see your post is a bit old, your symptoms sound exactly like mine so wanted to try to contact you to see if you ever got them resolved. I have had a couple dr's tell me over the years they thought I had FM but nothing for sure. my family dr recently put me on Lyrica, has helped some of the pain but not the breast pain, had a mamo today and have to wait for up to a week for diagnoses, The pain is so bad at times I scream and can't move, seems to start in the center of my left breast and radiate all over, I am post meno by 17 years by surgery and I am 51 now, I hope you found a resolution to your pain, Please if so let me know, Hugs from WV

I have tendinitis in my bicep tendon and have had shoulder surgery to remove a bone spur that was blocking off passage of my tendons through where the bicep tendons attach to the breast area to the shoulder region. I had what is called Impingement Syndrome. Not everyone requires surgery and most people can treat it with ice and a good NSAID or anti-inflammatory medication.

I had a lot of pain in my breast area and also in my shoulder and into my bicep and arm. This was a symptom of tendinitis for me and the Impingement Syndrome. Many people with Fibromyalgia are prone to tendinitis and bicep tendinitis can cause breast pain. It is always best to have your doctor check out any new pains that you might be experiencing however.

Also, having a good fitting bra is very important. If you haven't been fitted for one recently I encourage you to do so. Many lingerie shops will do this for free. Oprah did a show on bras once and found that most women are not wearing the right size. Just some food for thought...

I also have severe fibro as well as lupus, asthma and severe arthritis.  And yes, I do get very bad pains in my breast (usually only the right one) sometimes.  Occassionally I can attribute the pain to consuming too much caffeine, but quite often it is most noticeable when I am having a flare of the fibro.  I've had a complete hysterectomy (including ovaries) and do not take hormone replacement so I know my breast pain is not cycle related.  I also don't believe it's heart related as it's not "deep" enough if that makes any sense - it's definitely in the breast tissue.  When the pain is bad, it does definitely hurt to have my breasts touched and sometimes to the point of even wearing a bra is terribly painful.  My last mammo was about six months ago and it was perfectly normal.

totie-yes i have mammograms every year.

the nuero told me to go the ER yesterday because the pain was so severe. that was a waste of time and money. they did an ekg and a chest x ray, told me that i was not having  heart attack and sent me home.

the pain is getting MUCH WORSE. i am going to have to call my gyno back and nicely demand to be seen.

this is is some of the worst pain i have every experienced in my life!

You are welcome. Know that you are not alone. When these odd pains happen it makes us feel alone and so afraid.  There are many symptoms that come a long with FM that you figure out that are common with other FM people and then other symptoms that you seem to have specific to you. It helps so much to share.  The thing to do is not allow doctors to turn everything in to FM pain and get things checked out if you know your body isn't feeling right.  But also do what you are doing and reach out and educate yourself as much as you can and you will begin to put things together. Once you do that you will also be able to come up with a treatment plan in conjunction with doctors and therapists you see.

FM is a process, for me it's taken years to to figure out and get on the right medications and figure out what makes my symptoms worse.  Things are little more evolved with it and it's now more viewed as a "real" issue.
In saying this don't label yourself. It's one part of who you are, you are still TEXASGIRL, don't ever forget that.

Take care!!!!!

Yes, there are times I can't touch or be touched in the breast area or my breast bone. It was afraid when it started (years ago).  Keep that area warm. Dress in layers.  I had very similar symptoms.  Always check with your gyno but FM has a lot of odd things like this. I often get a wrapping back around my upper back rib cage. After a lot of tests it turns out it is FM.

I use a topical cream called Nutra Ultra MSM Joint cream. You can find it on VitamineShoppe.com. It's excellent for this type of pain.

Best to you.

i forgot to explain the pain. it hurts to touch it, lift anything, get up out of the chair and it hurts to breath. the pain is only on one side. no changes in the skin or nipple that i can see. when the pain hits, it is this stabbing pain in the center of my breast.
