hypersensitive skin and numb patch/nerve pain

uk2
Hi

I posted about a large numb patch i had on my hip/buttock last week it started off as small as my thub nail and in 2 mths it has grown to a large dinner plate, it was sore around the edge and completly numb in the middle but caused me little bother but after hydrotherapy on thursday a few hours the left leg was sore in patches and nerve pain shooted up and down the leg then the skin got so over sensitive i could not bare clothes touching the leg area around the numb patch it was like hot pokers driving into my skin i was in tears in the end i took some diazapam 10 mg which took the edge off now it has subsided to just an ache and a small patch that i cant touch or lay on and is ok if i dont walk or sit for longer then a min at the same time i had a pinching sensation in my back like sciatica apin but not down my leg just in one spot in my back do you think the hydro caused all this or was it to do with the numb patch that had been there for 2 mths before, the physio said it is not normal to have permanant numbness in fibromyaglia on and off sensations are felt but not permanant so i am wondering if i should go to the dr about this and what could of caused it any thoughts??

Hi there uk -

I'm glad to hear that.  I think a neuro would be better able to locate the problem, if it isn't dealing with the FMS...and I agree...it sounds like something else going on.

If you are like me, you probably swung that leg as far and as high as you could...just try doing it a little bit next time.  We always tend to 'overachieve' lol.

I know what you mean about that whiplash.  I had a car accident over 20 yrs. ago (ran head on into a truck who pulled in front of me.)  Of course, the ins. co. pressures you to settle, but down the road most neck injuries like that result in arthritis and other problems.  Ask the therapist if he has a 'band' that you can use at home.  It's stretchy and you can do arm exercises at your own pace, while sitting down.

Let us know how it goes at the neurologist's office, when you get an appt.  Take care and feel better soon.

Hi Breeze

I have an referal from my GP to queens neuro hospital in london and am waiting to hear so i will bring it up then when i go i also see my rheumy again in august so will mention it too him as it is not fibro and i think there is a separate issue going on here. The pool was not as hot as the nhs pool i went to in a hospital last yr that was 36 this is i think 30 so actually a little cool for me i think it was the swining my leg back wrds that set the pain off he did say it would be trial and error so i will try again but avoid the leg exercises it does not give me much to workon though as i cant do many neck or shoulder exercises as i have an old neck/shoulder injury from a horse riding accident and a whiplash so i wonder if paying £40 a week is worth it but then its the only exercise i do i'll give it one more try and if the same happens i'll stop it.

While hydrotherapy can be useful for some, it isn't for everyone.  I have a small spa and I can only stay in it for a little while or the heat will cause swelling and make symptoms worse.  It could be that you are hypersensitive to the heat and because this process stimulates muscles as well as nerves, it made your condition worse.

I believe it would benefit you to seek a visit with a neurologist.  Again, it sounds like you have a condition that may be effecting your sciatica or some type of disc problem. Also, if the hydrotherapy made it worse, you can ask that they lower the water temperature or try another method for pain.

Hope you feel better soon.
