The ESR is a fairly reliable indicator of the course of disease and can be used to monitor disease therapy, especially for inflammatory autoimmune diseases. In general, if the ESR increases the disease worsens and as it falls the disease improves. Some abnormal findings that could cause increase sed rates are: Chronic renal failure, inflammatory diseases like polymyalgia rheumatica, Lupus, temporal arteritis. Necrotic tissue diseases, and severe anemia such as iron deficiencies or b12 deficiencies.
Sed Rate is on inflammatory marker test. So if you have a high sed rate you have systemic inflammation. I could be cause by many things. Some examples might be Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, autoimmune diseases. This test is usually done along side other marker to rule out specific inflammatory diseases. Hope this helps
